Update Diagbox version

Post by RichardW »

Mine is only running 7.02 as it came. This won't talk to the new C4... Anyone got links to update files? And what was the story with saving the licence line to avoid having to re-install it?

Like a wally, I forgot to subscribe to the forum I created, so just catching up on these posts!

Yes I have the updates Richard, I suspect you will want to update to the stable version V7.58?

I will send you a PM with the relevant info.

If it is working fine now and activated, copy the licence file from C:\AWROOT\BIN\FI\APPDIAG.SYS before you update and store it safely.

Now updated - it *really* didn't want to go though! I run it in a virtual machine using Vista, and I have a shared folder between that and the main host OS for transferring files. For some reason it just didn't like the files on the shared drive and kept telling me it couldn't find them, even though it and I could see them! Eventually managed to get it copied to somewhere it would, run but then it just kept hanging, even after multi re-starts and killing the PSA tasks.... Finally I stumbled across an option to run as admin which made it work. Then the OS was complaining about a lack of disc space - I'll need to see if I can increase the size of the virtual disk allocated to the virtual OS! Now to see if it will still talk to the car(s).... forced regen on the silver one, then turn off the DPF warning light!

I think you’ll find it will struggle full stop Richard, a VM is going to take memory away from the resource pool - how much physical memory do you actually have? If it’s a 32 bit host it will only be able to use about 3Gb of ram assuming you have 4 in the system, and some of that may already be allocated for graphics if integrated or a hybrid.

Good luck with it, but it may really struggle.

Worked OK before - host is WIN 10 64 bit running 8GB; can't remember how much RAM I allowed the VM to use, but it's enough. I think I only set up a 25 or 50meg virtual drive, so need to see if I can increase that.

Ok, so a Win 10 system - so physical RAM won't be an issue then, but I would allocate at least 3072 to the VM (Vista I think you said) - but results will vary.

Bugger.... it doesn't work. After a bit of playing I can get it to recognise the car and open Diagbox, but the when it presents the four options; clicking on any of them just results in a couple of seconds of 'activity' icon then nothing happens. I get an error message when I start it, which says psaDDCupdater.exe has stopped working. I've also got SEDRE and service docs installed there, and something had gone wrong there as well (running them from a virtual DVD, and it was refusing to recognise the DVD whereas it did before). So I've uninstalled them, and will uninstall diagbox and reinstall it.

7.02 reinstalled and working - although I have some programs that it keeps telling me have stopped. Once I've checked Tom's C4 Picasso, I'll update it again and see what happens....

Yes let us know - also be aware that if SEDRE & servicedocs are installed after you have installed Diagbox, you need to stop the running DB services first.

Worked fine on 7.02 to talk to Tom's C4 earlier on.... will update it to 7.57 later, and see if that works.

Re: Update Diagbox version

Post by RichardW »

No go.... same error.

I got this:
diagbox error.JPG
I managed to fix that by installing updated C++ runtime library. However, when it runs the psastart file at boot, it fails, and gives an error that psaagent has failed to start. When I open DiagBox I get the same error. It says the fault is in a file msvcr90.dll - which also appears to be something to do with C++ - however despite installing the later versions of C++ runtime, and copying that file to everywhere I could find an earlier version, it still won't run  I searched for the file in the registry but it's not mentioned any where. I then tried to re-install the doc back up, but that gives me an error on the software being out of date and it won't open. I've had that before, but a restart fixed it - not this time.

Can someone search for the that DLL and see where it is located?

Otherwise I think I'm going to have to re-install windows patch up the C++ to the latest (although the 2015 version won't currently install), and then see if DiagBox will install on a clean version. If that won't work, then I'll have to go looking for a later version of Windoze....

Totally crocked it now I think - can't get the 7.57 updater to run now. I think a re-install of the OS is required.

Annoyingly I have discovered that you can take snapshots of the VM and go back to them. Wish I had known that BEFORE I started messing with it

If it an't broke.....fix it till it is

I've never run DB in a VM - I just have a dedicated laptop and use Win 7 for the diags Richard. If you are going to reinstall, do the elec/service progs first first and make sure they are working before attempting DB. Doing it the other way round needs the PSA services closing before you attempt installation.

Re: Update Diagbox version

I think I've got it to work - it will start Diagbox without error messages, so I'm hopeful it will talk to the car; I'll try later.

I created another virtual machine, installed a fresh copy of Vista, then updated the C++ libraries and tried to install docbackup - no dice... So I rolled it back (neat that I discovered the snapshot!) and tried installing it again without the libraries updated - success!

So it looks like I need 2 virtual machines to get both to co-exist :rofl2:
