Maximum tyre Radius on Espace IV?

Post by Axa »

Hi.

Time to renew both summer and winter tyres and are wondering if one step up in width or profile from 245/45r18 is ok?
I have done that on every other car ive owned, but It looks to be a tight fit in the front as it is now.
So it would be nice to to here if others are using 235/55r17 with success? as it gives +1,9% in diameter.
225/60r17 gives +3,4% so I guess thats out of the limit..
Reason to why I ask is that im looking at good second hand tires, as I would like to improve the comfort on harsh roads in hope to make joints and bushings to last longer

Cheers Gunnar

2years have gone and still silent... Is there no comfort aware Espace pilot in space that have gone up in summertire volume?
235/55/17 and 215/60/17 must fit with +1,9% over the standard 225/55/17 radius. But how about 225/60/17 ?? I guess going up in profile is much more efficient on increased isolating sharp edge impacts. :?: :?:

Your post is confusing.

You start by talking about going up in width or profile then you trot out some sizes which are all narrower.

Also you start with 18 inch wheels then switch to 17 inch ones. Are you also going to change the wheels?

Since the profile is a percentage of the width you aren't necessarily getting a bigger sidewall by going down a width size and up a profile. I don't see what the gain is. A smaller wheel and same width with a bigger profile would make sense though.

And you will be spending a lot of money replacing wheels to maybe save a little on suspension components. You could just drive a bit slower instead?

Driving slower??? 😮 If i eventually get to that state of mind I will (I hope) buy a campervan!! 😂
No Sorry. I have now edited the subject! Tyre RADIUS is what im taking about.
I started with mentioning 18" wheels since that's what the car had when we bought it. I quickly found a set of very cheap 17" wheels with decent 225/55/17 tyres. Now 2 needs to be replaced. Tomorrow I will also on Hankook venture prime 225/60/17 in the rear and hope they will work fine up front being a tad smaller in radius when the eventually get a bit better worn in time for next 2tyres. (Anyway Always best tyres in the rear since cars are made to crash front first in opposite to skidding sideways in ice or aquaplaning !!)

I will stick to 215/60/17 on winter tyres to maintain space for snow chains even the Espace are remarkably good even on slippery winter roads.

OK, https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ may help.

The 225/55R17 tyres are the same diameter/circumference as the 245/45R18 . But they are quite a bit narrower. I guess they would work but I wouldn't want them.

The 225/60R17 tyres are 3.4% bigger, the usual recommendation is not to change the radius by more than 1% for safety. Mixing those sizes on the same car could also cause problems for the ABS/traction control as the wheels will be rotating at different speeds.

So no, definitely not the 225/60R17 tyres.

Then you confuse things again by mentioning 215/60R17 tyres. But they are still too big so we can ignore that.

As far as I can tell the correct 17" tyre would be a 245/50R17 - same tread width and within 1% diameter.

Actually no, the correct option would be to go with what the manufacturer fitted it with.

Our Espace drives very good on 225/55/17. I just had a few laps on a local auto slalom course. And it certainly handles better then the almost identicly heavy 2010 4x4 Toyota HiAce van I'm driving at work that got 195/70/15 as standard dimension.
Surely it does not corners as a sports car as it almost does in comparison on the 245/40/18 I will keep for ocational autoslalom days. An excellent way to practice cordination and reactions in an safe and fun setting. But 18" are Just horribly uncomfortable on the bad quality roads around here. And have caused xenon bulbs to crack and probably killed the navigation system. And for sure shortened the life of ball joints and bushings to!
I didn't not get to push the 2001 Espace 3 we had, but that one had 195/65/15 as standard dimension
All of them plenty less grippy then the 225/55/17 that needs replacement. In Scandinavia the legal limit for changes in tyreradius are 5% So I struggle to see how +3,4% would make a car unsafe to drive on normal roads!? (please don't forget all HiAce and similar work vans speeding around on 195/70/15!!!!)

So finger pointers aside.... If anyone know for sure if there is enough room for 225/60/17.. or not! I would greatly appreciate to hear about it asap in case it can spare me the cost of mounting new tyres unnecessarily. ☺️

225/60/17 and No hint of rubbing. Noticibly improved comfort and ground clearance. =D>
