Oil cooler Aisin AJ0 6speed auto gearbox. Where is it?

Post by Axa »

In trying to locate the hoses top the gearbox oilcooler in hope it's possible to do the oil change trough them. Or at least let the oil out that way as I've read on Volvo forums is a good way to get (almost all of) the oil changed.

Short answer to your question.....I dont know.

But if the Gearbox is one of these AWTF-80SC or one of the various other names the 6-speed auto box is known by different manufacturers on Vauxhalls the original cooler was part of the main radiator. Source of many wrecked boxes with water/antifreeze ingress to the ATF.
That particular box also has an internal filter, which is only accessible by removing the box ie at major rebuild time.
Mine is now fitted with an external aftermarket cooler.

There are plenty videos on you tube, of mostly Americans changing their "tranny" oil using various hoses and buckets and topping via the filler hole with the engine running purpose being to do a full flush and clear the oil in the torque converter as well. I have been tempted myself, but never tried it.

The above box specifies AW-1 spec ATF, and as with all changes of ATF the correct specification oil is vital, and if you search the various forums, plenty people ready to give an opinion but safest bet...stick precisely with the right spec oil, and pay a little extra if required.

The standard procedure involves just changing through the drain plug/ level checking plug and is a partial change. The level of ATF is also vital, and easy to get wrong with the rather cumbersome procedures required for checking. It is not always safe to assume that you are currently operating with the correct level of AFT using the what drains out replace with the exact quantity of fresh method.

Then again, can you find an AT Specialist to do it for you...probably quite easily....but will they just put it on the machine, and fill up with "universal ATF" from the communal vat.....who knows?... but the nagging doubt is always there..

Thanx Neil.
I found out the cooler or heat exchanger as it really is, is at the back of the gearbox wich turned out to not be an Aisin but an Jatco AJ0-002 ( called JF506E if looking at Jatco wiki page)
The fill hole is also at the back. I started to remove parts to get access. But I suddenly came up with an way to fill from below. I used the level tube that is screwed in on the inside of the drain plug. It is 6mm thick and I had som fuel hose that fitted perfectly on the levelpipe wich I screwed back in backwards so it sticks out to hold the hose .
The other end of the thick fulehose fitted perfectly in the plastic pipe on the end of the cheap fluid transfer hand pump.

I managed to get out exactly 4liters of old really dark ATF. I got the last ~0.5L by loosening the lower half of the screws on the valve cover/pan and bending that out a few mm with a small dull flat head screwdriver (don't brake the gasket! )

Pumping 4L back in took som time. Make sure to have plenty of latex gloves and rags around.

Som fluid will pour out when you screw the level pipe back out and put the plug on while removing the fuelhose and then screwing the level pipe back in. Be ready with Allen key in the pipe before removing the drain plug again.
