That looks well butchered!

The wires are for the Air bags and horn.
Doctle Comms.PNG
In the above, the Comms unit is item (1) and the optional Cruise control is item (10) and the optional Audio controls is item (5). Items (5) & (10) just slide and lock into the comms unit and if you have these on you old unit, should unclip, slide out and are designed to lock into the replacement unit.

The Comms Unit itself contains the wiper and indicator stalk and come as complete unit and are not intended for separation. Most of the units on ebay come with the wiring plugs attached, and these simply plug onto the airbag boss in the middle of the steering wheel. These are NOT designed to be lopped off and reattached! If that's what you've bought, I'd send it back.

I'm assuming you've ordered the correct part too - as these are not standard and must be correct - there are hundreds, so it must be the correct one.

Yes, tell them they've basically crippled the thing and it's no good to man nor beast and I would NEVER recommend hashing together those control wires with scotch blocks or the like because of the obvious safety issues with airbags. If you look a the ones on ebay for example Paul, you'll see they just about all have the wiring plugs intact.

And secondly, make sure they pay the return postage which they have to do as it is a defective item - useless and non-functional.

I thought as much as it will basically cost them money and they can't resell it anyway in that state. Glad that is sorted for you. :)

So I saw this on the well known auction site
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-Part ... sxG7a9%2FT
This made me go and dismantle the broken one and its not difficult to take apart. I have nothing to lose by seeing if the stalks work after changing them

The haynes book says to disconnect the plug from the airbag ecu before removing the airbag, is this necessary?

Absolutely. Before doing anything, flip the bonnet and disconnect the battery negative (don’t allow it to accidentally reconnect), and await for 10 minutes before doing anything with the airbag wiring. This is to allow the airbag capacitors to discharge ( risk of igniting).

But you shouldn’t need to do anything with the airbag ECU, as that is buried in the centre console somewhere near the front end of the dash. You just need to disconnect battery and wait, then when you get to the steering wheel boss airbag, you can note the colour connection and disconnect the plugs.

This is the Airbag ECU:

The nickname for the Haynes books is "Haynes BoL" (Book of Lies). While they CAN get things right, they also DO get things wrong. Often they copy and paste details between versions of cars.

Two examples I can recall are for the S1 and S2 Xantia. To change the bulbs in the instrument panel you have to take the steering wheel off on the S1, but you don't on the S2. To change the front fog light bulbs on the S1 you have to pull a shroud forwards, while on the S2 (if you have thin enough hands) you have to get your hands behind the bumper. However, in the later Haynes Xantia manuals (for the S2) they have just copied over the information, which makes working on an S2 interesting at times.

It may also be advantageous to ensure the system is fully discharged by shorting the battery leads through a light bulb, then shorting them together briefly.
Perhaps a bit over the top but better than having an airbag go off in your face.

I agree with the copy and paste stuff a lot of the info on the 207 seems to be the same as in the 307. I would wonder how accurate their torque settings are. I was thinking of getting an electronic version I saw on ebay but it doesn't say who the publisher is and it could be Haynes!
