407 heater blower working but feeble

Post by Jazzer »

Just bought this 2008 2 litre diesel hdi . I didn't spot the useless heater and now have visions of removing the dash.The blower is just about turning, i can hear it when i get close , the inlet and outlet water feeds are hot, the animated fan in the display says the fan is turning and i can feel the tiniest bit of air moving from the vents.Turning the rotating control knob does nothing other than turn it off , but does not get the blower above pathetic.Any thoughts would be really appreciated as i simply cannot face a main dealer bill.

Thanks Pat

If it is like the C5 (and shares the right part) it is very likely the heater blower module has failed (solder joins have gone open circuit). I DON'T know where it will be on a 407, or which module it would be, but it is not too difficult to replace. I would advise (when somebody with the right information can help) you do NOT get a cheap unit off e-bay. I did, and it did not last more than a few days. We got the original unit re-soldered, and it is working a lot better than the cheap one.

This MIGHT be the sort of thing you are looking for (and if it IS the right type I would buy it, as it is a genuine module; I have no links to the seller);

If it is the same type of module (and, until you post up the VIN we won't know; don't worry about security, the forum software will obscure it to all but the Moderators) I would open up both units (if you can; it might be a 'sealed for life' module) and check/re-do the solder joins on them. That way it is likely you would get the old one working again, and have a decent spare, just in case.

OK, so 2 possibilities. Item 10 is the Blower Control Module. Its purpose is to control the power to the blower motor based on what the Climate / Air Conditioning ECU command. It's designed to provide the appropriate regulated air flow based on the climate settings requested so that a gradual air flow can be supplied and increased or decreased in line with what the system can provide given other factors.

Normally, when these control units go they will be 'all or nothing' with the air flow either blasting out on one setting and nothing on the other settings - or nothing at all.

The fact that there is some air coming out would probably rule out the blower motor itself, although others here have determined that the motor bearings can be subject to moisture issues and rust / seizing up.

Anyway the part number for your 407 is 6441S7 (item (10) on the diagram. These retail at Peugeot for £141.87 inc. VAT for the part alone. Cheaper ones can be had from aftermarket sellers, but make sure you usr the part number I have supplied to search on as although these may apear to be the same they are all different for different vehicles.

If the part is too cheap - it probably is cheap. Try and go for a Valeo branded one if you want some quality.

There's a brand new original Citroen / Peugeot one here for £47!

If you were to post up the VIN of the C5 you are scrapping, Marc could look it up for you and see if the module is interchangeable. Then (if they can be opened and repaired) you could possibly have two working modules, some experience on how to swap them out, and not spent any money! Mind you, you will need a decent soldering iron, as the pins that carry the load for the motor are quite substantial!

Unfortunately, none are compatible from the C5 MK I or II facelift - only the MK III X7
