306 HDI radiator cooling fan not working

Post by Wil »

The radiator cooling fan does not come on when it should on our 306 1999 2.0 hdi with air conditioning.
When temprature goes higher than 95ish degrees the flashing stop light comes on but no fan.
I have checked the fuses, swapped the two green relays and the black relay in the fan housing.
I have fitted a new 3 pin sensor by the thermostat housing but now not even the flashing light comes on, so I have re fitted the old one and will send the new one for replacement as it might be faulty.
Can I cross certain 2 wires on the sensor plug/socket to test if the fan will come on so as to elininate the sensor?
When the the sensor is unpluged with the ignition on the fan will work!
Any ideas???

The unplug to make them come on is the overheat control, that indicates the fan and relays are basically OK. Usually there's a pause for a few seconds then one or both will come sometimes at low speed then switch to high speed. This is normal when you have it unplugged.

The stop light will come on in some cases if there's a fan problem too, this is something I only reasonably recently learned.

Do the fans (probably just one) work if you switch the AC on ?

It may well be the control unit for it itself, I think this is up behind the glovebox area on a 306, although I'd have to check this.

Thanks for that Spider. I will try it with the air conditioning on.

Hi, not sure if your car has resistance coils for the fan operation, if it does this may help:

Thanks 'Uncle Buck. My cooling fan has the relays under a plastic cover between the two fans.
I have tested the fans with the automatic air canditioning/climate control manualy on but still no cooling fan.
The fan on the air conditioning and the small fan near the interior light are both turning slowly when the aircon is off if that indicates anything.
The compressor does not come on when selecting cold temprature, there is no click to indicate it is engaged. Perhaps that is because the system needs re charging?
I have had a look under the passenger dashboard where the aircon is located and cannot see anything apart from the fan unit. A passenger airbag stops me looking down from the top, but I could take off the glove compartment lid off. Is access to the aircon modules from under the bonnet under the wiper mechanism or from inside the car?
What do I look for?

If the air con sytem is low on gas it won't cut in, so that answers one question.

I've never had the pleasure of working on 306 fans so have no clue about them.

Maybe these links may help you...

Thanks again. I will have a look at the bitron under the front passenger wing.
I have a 406 HDI and in the 4 years I have owned it the temp gauge has never gone above 90 and the radiator fans have never come on. I have flushed out the cooling system every 2 years on my cars which help keep the cooling system clean.
I have put a bottle of rad flush in the 306 now and will leave it there for a while then give it a good flushing to try and get better circulation.

Sorry to slightly hi-jack the thread! I recently asked my local independent Peugeot / Citroen specialist to check out my air con system. They re-gassed it as requested but found there was a leak(s) and so they took the gas out again. I was told that my fan did not come on due to the system locking things off, due to the low gas / leak. He proposed enclosing the leaking pipe(s) within a pipe for want of a better description; the other option was to fit new pipes of course which could end up costing a lot of money. I have had quite a bit of work done on two occasions by this garage, and all of it to my full satisfaction.

I've read countless people with 306 cars that have neglected to repair a once working air con system, so I am keen to get things sorted when funds are available. How long is it reasonably safe to leave my air con in this state before repairing it? It's so rare to find a 306 with working air con that I do not want to lose this!

It should be OK if its sealed, leaving any pipe open will rot the pipes from inside due to moisture as far as I understand. The receiver / drier bottle will absorb moisture rapidly too when exposed to the air. I bet its the pipes under the radiator that's a common place for them to go.

Thanks. I asked for a rough ballpark price for a repair and he naturally could not easily give one, but he did say at the cheapest it would be £130 approx but could also end up being £300+ due to Peugeot's pricing on parts.

IIRC the hoses are about 80 to 90 odd each, I do recall the one around the radiator (the most common one) went on back order for ages at one time. This was when the 306 was still in production.

Ahhh so the odds of getting new parts direct from Peugeot look a lost cause; hope my garage likes using alternative sources! The owner is a no nonsense no bodge kind of guy, which is good of course.

Do you have aircon ?

First step examine all fuses in the engine bay.

Does the temp gauge work properly ?
