Peugeot 207 Fusebox Issues

Post by DHallworth »

I bought a 207 HDi for Cheryl the other day.

I noticed when looking around it before buying that it needed a couple of bulbs but thought nothing of it. When we got it home yesterday I tried to change the bulbs and noticed that they still didn't work.

I took the plugs off the headlights and metered the plugs. I was getting 6v at some of the pins and only 2v at the other pins. Whilst I scratched my head I scanned the car with Peugeot Planet and noticed fault codes for both LH & RH Headlights and LH & RH sidelights. After this, I did a bit of Googling and found something saying that the fuse boxes on these get wet and corrode so I took the plugs off the under bonnet fuse box and was greeted to this mess:

IMG_0104.JPG
It's so corroded that some of the pins stuck in the plug and came completely off the fusebox and when cleaning the fusebox with a cocktail stick the other pins were falling off as soon as they were touched!!

The fuse box on our car has the numbers 9644997880 written on the label and according to ServiceBox has the part number 6500 HW.

I've found that there's 3 versions:

I've been round 4 scrap yards locally today and have looked at 8 different 207's which all had 6500FH fitted to them. What confused me is 7 of them were 1.4 Petrols. 1 of them was a 1.4 Diesel, and another I messaged someone on Gumtree about was a 1.6 THP which also had 6500FH fitted to it.

Brand new from Peugeot 6500HW is £264.20 (£150 on eBay for a new Genuine one) whereas 6500HV is much cheaper at £102.29 (£75 on eBay for a new Genuine one).

According to the specs on ServiceBox, the difference is Directional Headlights and Headlight Washers... Does this mean I can fit the cheaper fusebox and just leave the fuse for both out? I noticed that on mine some of the pins are blanks so will it just be a couple of extra pins?

I'm pretty confused by it all!

I've found this one on eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-CITR ... :rk:2:pf:0

It's specific number is 9667199680, according to Peugeot this is fitted after RP11557 with headlamp wash wipe. Could I just fit this to mine and leave the fuse out?

The other thing I was wondering, is there a way of putting 6500HW into ServiceBox and getting a list of what Peugeots/Citroens it was fitted to?

Thanks in advance!

David.

6500HW is the correct one for your car David, according to the VIN.

As it's a fuse box I would always plump to get the right one for the model - also given that this interfaces with the BSI and the engine ECU I wouldn't chance the wrong one for the sake of £50 difference - but that's just me :-D

Here's one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genuine- ... 2181129133

Thanks Marc,

I was thinking along the same lines but was wondering what the differences were.

I've found someone breaking a 2011 in Glasgow and from looking at the pictures, it doesn't have directional headlights so am hopeful I can get one tomorrow. If this doesn't come through then I'll order one on eBay. I'm impatient and don't fancy waiting for one to arrive if I can avoid it.

Don't forget to make sure all the "debries" is out of the connector or you might ruin something when trying to fit it...

Hi
I doubt very much that simply plugging the new unit in, using the old plugs will work.
The connectors in the plugs will have suffered the same as the pins in the fuse box and, if they work at all, will be unreliable, particularly when they get warm.
To repair that properly you'll need to change the connectors too. The old ones may be difficult to extract from the plastic body, but you should be able to get them out and re-use the plastic with new female connectors crimped to the cables.
You may well find that the copper has gone black for some distance up inside the insulation sleeve. If so, achieving a good connection to the new connectors will be difficult and it might be worth changing the loom.
If it's not bad enough to warrant this, you might be able to clean the cores sufficiently to serve again, using plumbers soldering flux.
Apply some flux, heat it with a soldering iron and allow the flux to drip off. Crimp on the new connector, apply a little more flux on the crimped joint, heat it and, this time run a little solder into the joint.
Don't overdo it, because the solder will creep up the cable and make it stiff and brittle, which you do NOT want in a vehicular application.
Be careful, doing one cable at a time, so you don't mix them up.
When you're finished spray the assembled joint with water repellent, to try and prevent a recurrence.
Hope this helps

Do you know what electrical systems the main (brown) fuse plug controls?
