307 rear suspension knock

Post by RichardW »

Got a slight knock on the rear suspension. Can't be many things, as it's pretty simple! Damper bottom bush or trailing arm bush is about it really. Bush cheaper but more work to change.... any ideas which is the more likely candidate?

i'd guess a shocker bush or maybe the exhaust,
dose it occur at any particular time/road surface angle of the dangle ?????

It's quite pronounced now - jacked it up today expecting to find the bottom damper mount well away but couldn't see any play there, so it must be the trailing arm pivot bushes, which have noticeable play if jacked up from underneath (at least on the nearside anyway). Looks like the brake pipe will need to be separated to free the rear subframe, as it passes through a bracket welded to the subframe; and I have a suspicion that there is not enough room on the off side to withdraw the pivot bolt as the fuel tank is in the way, so the mount will need to be dropped off the car - which I've read somewhere needs to be re-aligned when refitting  Hopefully it will get through the MOT so I don't have to do it in February....

doesn't the 307 have a solid rear axle beam with integral rear arms Richard ?????, it certainly looks that way on pug service box, unless certain models did not

Yes, it's all one piece Malc - there's a pivot at each side which is effectively the trailing arm pivot point, and the 'subframe' mounting point, which has a large rubber bush in it. I suspect this accounts to some degree for the bouncy suspension  although the C4 uses the same system as far as I can see, and the suspension on that is not so hard / bouncy.... :?

Think they're OK - it's bouncy as in hard suspension rather than bouncy as in knackered shocks.

Cheers Malc. Seemingly the bushes are plastic outer so not that hard to get in/out - I have an array of spacers / tubes / big washers in the wheel bearing puller kit which should do it, would just need to get some M12 bar or something to use in the centre - or I may have an old BX TD headbolt that would be long enough (never throw anything away!)

Since I jacked it up last weekend, and jacked up the NS arm under the shock mount and the front mount, and took the wheel off, that side has been much quieter. How does that work then

The 306's use to be bad for the beam mountings failing causing them to knock and bang.

I chased a knock for ages on my old 306 many years ago and then changed the bushes that mount the rear axle to the body and it cured it. Difference was night and day! Not sure if the 307 has the same setup or not.

the 306 has a torsion bar rear axle mounted to the body by 4 bush's
the 307 has a rigid axle with integral rear arms which hang on two round bush's forward of the axle beam, fitted horizontally and east to west,
then the rear end sits on two coil'ies and shockers

Ahh! Thanks for that Malcolm, sounds like a completely different setup.

The 307 my sister has had has been such a reliable car we've never really had to do anything to it so I've not had a reason to go poking about under it.

Was rather hoping this one would be reliable, but it's needing rather more attention that I would like!

Having replaced the OSF wheel bearing and CV joint, the NS bearing started rumbling. Jacked it up yesterday to see what it sounded like at low turning speed, as MOT is due, to find that not only is there an audble rumble when turned at MOT sort of speed, but there's also a load of play in the bottom ball joint, so I suspect both will have to be done for MOT  Very deep 41mm socket required for the ball joint.... not sure I fancy stripping it off outside this weather :?

Joint, bearing and socket ordered.... Pumped up the tyres on the Visa, so hopefully can push that out the garage if needed. Then remembered it could also do with a new d-shaft oil seal on that side whilst it's apart, so need to order one of those too....
