2010/11 C4 1.6 E-HDI EGS Gearbox Fault

Post by PSMills »

Hi, just been reading through a number of threads regarding C4 semi auto gearbox issues. Having had similar problems like, randomly been unable to select D M or R upon starting engine, it recently began dropping our of D to N whilst driving and has now gone into Gearbox Fault. Cannot select D M R, occaisionally says put into N to start car, which it's already in, goes into economy mode when you mesh for a while.

AA and specialist local Auto garage have read a 1733 fault, indicating the gearbox actuator, which is unrepairable, and the whole unit has to be replaced at £900 just for the unit!

Are there any alternative suggestions as to whether orther fixes are worth a try first.

Is it viable to buy second hand unit and replace myself?

Any pointers much appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

P1733 is a Gear selection actuator position sensor 1 supply fault: No signal.

Unfortunately, that is a very reasonable estimate - depending on the exact fault is could be far more than that. I have little info on this specific error unfortunately, but as you've gathered these can be very expensive to fix - it really is a decision you have to make against your love for / and the worth of the vehicle to you against the that minimal estimate for repair - bearing in mind if not the actuator there will be further expense.

It is not a casual job to replace - and does require Diagbox to record the gearbox counters and parameters and to transfer these values to the new actuator.

I know it doesn't help here and now, but most would recommend a manual or fully Auto box for future ref.

Thanks Marc, much appreciated

Interestingly, I went to move the car from the garage today, I sat in and started the car, whilst they pushed me to a road area where I could collect from over the weekend.

I noticed that all looked ok on dash and gear selector light showed N, so put into A and drove off!

All seemed ok from the garage resetting all the faults.

I drove home, about 3 miles, on the way it did slip out of gear give the faulty gearbox warning. Luckily after a few minutes rest, it started fine again and I carried on, weird or what...

I appreciate it is faulty, but would this change the diagnosis?

Did they check the fluid level?

I think you'll find that you'll get intermittent issues until the fault is fully resolved. This of course presents a 'reliability & confidence' issue.

Thanks Delvey, I had checked myself having read lots of mentions of this and the dodgy pipes. Just double checked again, although there is some evidence of seepage down the the front, the level is almost at the max mark.

Hi my 2013 C4 gearbox occasionally jumps out of gear when going up a steep driveway from a level road but corrects its self back into gear should I check anything.

My Picasso 2012 now sometimes will not select N to start. Occasionally when running I stop and it will not go into reverse. Normally after 5 minutes playing with the selector it rectifies. My Citroen dealer ran the computer for 2 hours and could not find the fault. He said it is not the selector nor the gearbox. It is booked in for next week for full test.

Are there any messages displayed? I.e., when you change the gear selector to try and move it out of Neutral, does it remain in N and does the gear selector display on the dash change from 'N' to 2 dashes?

Does the message say "Gearbox Fault"?
