Possibly time to think of a new silencer....

Post by cornesoutafrica »

Hi everyone

Well took my C4 VTS out for a long drive after doing cambelt. All went well. Although. Today while washing the car I looked underneath and saw my rear silencer got watermarks running from the center seam. So i guess after 15 years the silencer is starting to rust through from the inside....

My previous car had an aftermarket silencer on. Which made it quite loud. I hated it. So. My question is. Where do I find if at all possible the monstrous standard rear silencer for a VTS 180?

Might be looking for the rear box on a 2001 C5 3.0 v6 too...

Any help will be great!

Thanks

I know that, in the UK, there are companies who can make stainless steel exhausts, with a lifetime (of the car) guarantee. I would imagine there are companies in South Africa that can do the same. It could be worth looking into.

Hi James.

Thanks. Yes there are. But I don’t want to go that route as they are a fair bit louder. I want to keep as far away from it as possible

If it's the part numbers, here they are for you, but as for SA suppliers I couldn't say, but at least you have the official part numbers.

The companies here in the UK will ask you if you want it loud or quiet.. They can make it as you wish. I imagine they'll do the same there too. It's worth asking as it'll likely be cheaper and better quality than an OEM one.

Thanks Marc

Will call the local dealers and find out. Although I doubt they will have anything.

Michel. I have tried stainless steel units in the past. All the suppliers uses a universal unit that fits the space. The baffles inside are not enough to quiet them down. And as we don’t have any real laws regarding enissions or sound people fit the cheapest stainless unit they can find which is usually quite loud. Catalytic converters also get removed then.... The quietest unit locally supplied and fitted I ever heared is on a C5 and the droning noise in the car is appalling. Not nearly as pleasant as the oem system. Same happened with my old c4 vts. Previous owner fitted a stainless steel rear silencer. It was very drony.

For some reason guys that heared my old c4 loved the sound. Very throaty, but I hated it.

Guess I am going to have to make a study on it and possibly see if I can’t get something very similar to keep the noise down.

If your current exhaust is original it might be possible for a decent exhaust fabricator to take the innards of it and use them in a new one (assuming the internal parts are still of a high standard).

That is a very good idea James, thanks. On my c4 it is still the standard unit.

But the C5 silencer was already changed. That might be difficult to get hold of. But I will try. Sounds like a project coming!

This is the silencer on my c4. Notice the spots it is leaking from.

There are plenty of aftermarket suppliers for standard mild steel exhaust components, that meet oe spec for both noise and emissions.
Personally, I generally use Bosal, but I haven't bothered doing one for several years, as I can't compete with the free fit places, so it's possible they may not be available now.
A look on the bay should produce several results, I would have thought

BUT, in a market where there is no need to meet those specs, they are unlikely to be able to compete with some local cheapo, cheapo pattern part manufacturer.
