Approaching/Full steering lock results in illuminated battery light

Post by dave_xsara »

Hi,

When I put full (or approaching full) steering lock on there is a squealing noise which I assume is the serpentine belt and sometimes the battery light comes on.

What I think is happening is that something causes the PAS pump to jam and this stops the belt from turning and hence the battery light illuminates.

Is this a known problem with the PAS pump on the Xsara and if so can the existing pump be fixed or does it need a replacement unit?

Thanks.

Holding on full lock can put quite a strain on PAS pumps, and might cause belt issues, affecting the alternator.

It is even prior to full lock when negotiating tight spaces such as a car park. Sorry I should have been more precise in the OP.

It sounds like a dual-mass crankshaft pulley that is de-laminating and slipping. That would be stopping all of the ancillaries working under load.

Adjusted the eccentric tensioner pully and that has resolved the problem. I had bought a new spring tensioner pully, but it didn't fit so have returned it.

It's a temporary solution until the belt stretches again - I'll then get the correct spring pulley and resolve it.

I was hoping this would cure the vibration problems but that still exists. No idea what is causing it - everything seems tight.

Get some tippex, draw a line across the crankshaft pulley, if it moves.... mine was noisy before it ever slipped, serpentine belt tension will mess about too.

Forgot to say previously to this that the pulley has been recently replaced at the same time as the belt - approx 3 - 4 months ago.

It is still worth checking.
Did any of the symptoms above exist before the pulley was replaced?
