And so it continues....

Post by RPWC »

Had the injectors replaced on Monday, van runs much smoother, and not smoking as much, but it still has this awful smell around it,and doesn’t seem to be any better fuel consumption wise.
Any ideas? Marc; Mike T?

Stale diesel type. Been ongoing had leaking injector, that was sorted when I had all 4 resealed with new copper washers. After that it was still overfuelling, injectors removed again and all 4 had worn out. Had recon units fitted at a cost of 650 quid and it still smells and drinks the fuel. When I first got this ban in April I could get away on 25 quid of fuel a week, since the injector trouble its been 40. Dispatch 1.6 10 plate. See my other threads. Alll related to same thing.

Wrong type of smell, this is fuel related.

For this engine:

Official figures: 39.2 - 42.2 MPG
Real World: 32.0 - 39.0 MPG
Real Average: 36.2 MPG

If you've still got ongoing fuel smells and it won't clear up, then it's possible you still have a fuel leak somewhere. Where though is going to be hard for us to suggest remotely.

Take the plastic engine cover off (if you have one) and run the van and see if there is anything obvious leaking above or below.

There are a couple of things to look at, the piping to and from the tank, unlikely to be on the up from tank to pump side as that would let air into the system and cause running problems, on the return though you could have a leak that's dripping fuel underneath, maybe on the exhaust causing the smell, enough to stink but not enough to leave drips on the road.

The other thing is the sealing on the rear doors and where the exhaust tail pipe ends, if the rear doors have poor seals the forward movement of the van will suck the exhaust fumes into the back.

Have a good look for any signs of dampness on the fuel system especially around the filter, feel underneath it and see if its wet.

Diesel will leave a wetness where it leaks.
If dipping on to something hot, it will evaporate, but should smoke or give off a visible vapour.
It is very smelly stuff, so quite a small leak will pong.

No sign of leaks, its more of exhaust fumes but not normal exhaust fumes. This van has cost me over 1k in.repairs im 6 month, and is now only worth half what I paid for it . I still owe more than 4k on it whick I am paying off over next 42 months
I hate it , will never BUY again . next time its a contract hire for me.
80/90 quid a week pays gor everything bar fuel and insurance

I run old Peugeots, the 406 diesel estate is brilliant, I only paid £400 for the last one and I've had it for three years, recently come back from a 2500 mile tour and it was brilliant - until yesterday ....

Rich - I do feel the pain of the situation. Buying a second hand car is fraught enough (which is why I've mostly bought mine direct from Citroen) so I know the history and the maintenance of it (but even that is no guarantee of reliability - only history)- but a commercial vehicle must be worse as people buy them new and flog them to death with poor servicing and get another one - leaving the next owner with all the hassle.

It may well be less stress getting a contract hire - with all the maintenance taken care of for you - it means you won't own it - but hey if it's for work then that's not an issue - but the important thing is getting something reliable as you really cant afford to be without your wheels.

Exactly Marc, but as explained in last post, I still owe over 4k on the loan I took out to biy the bloody thing. Its only worth 2.5k to sell, which lravrs me with a huge shortfall AND the rental payment. Tjis combined figure would cost me c 350/400 per month
