Brake pipe nut sizes

Post by oscar »

Hi anyone know what size the fittings are on the brake pipes where goes to flexy?
I know flexy ends say M10 which must be thread size so bit that screws into must have bigger head?
Also do those metal bits holding flexy half a hex looking slide out or how you get them outta way?

Well a "flexy" is the flexible pipe made from often rubber that goes between the metal rigid ones so allows movement with suspension!.

Xsara Picasso 2001 2.0 diesel HDi rear brakes around between part on arm and body
So it's French so would think metric? plus being flexy pipe has M10 ends

Oh the joy of seeding a post of distraction and then watching the ensuing off-topicness.

But back on topic, this is one of those things where I would just have a selection of good quality open ended spanners and maybe a ring spanner or two if there are any locking nuts. Sizes I would have to hand would be (all metric) 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. It's one of those things where I really don't know what they are, I'm just prepared for everything!

Wouldn't this be a job for 'flare nut spanners' or 'crows foot' spanners?

I also have a small set of brake pipe spanners best described as a single hex ring spanner with a slot cut in one edge to allow the brake pipe through. These surround the nut concerned much better than simple open enders. The only problem being that they date from the time everything I touched used imperial sizes (7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8"). The 7/16" is a good (albeit slightly slack) fit for 11mm.

Flare-nut spanner 2.jpg
The famous flare nut spanner. Best in single-hex form, as you say, as it puts less strain on the nut tips, and does not inflict damage.
Indispensable for small brake and hydraulic pipes, and brake bleed screws.
Good ones are not particularly cheap.

I must apologise for my neat nuts. Neat they might/might not be, but they are near (and dear) to me.
