Dispatch 1.9D 2005/6 engine issues

Post by Wildfire »

Hi all

I'm posting on behalf of my dad, who's not the most internet savvy guy. He has a 2005/6 Citroen Dispatch with (I think) the DW8 diesel engine. We're pretty good with older petrol engines and motorbikes but not any experience with diesels.

Anyhow, he has had a lot of issues in the last 3 months with the engine.

He has been experiencing diesel clatter and power loss, followed by stalling. A mechanic friend tested the car and said it needed new injectors. We had the injectors refurbished and refitted and the engine ran ok, but still had issues starting and soon developed an issue where after a run up the motorway when decelerating if the revs dropped too low the car would stall.

Recently this has moved on to diesel clatter on start up, lack of power, combined with the temperature gauge not moving. If he drives the car up a motorway for any decent distance the clatter stops in conjunction with the temperature gauge righting itself and power picks up. However the stalling still occurs.

We have tried letting the car idle to temperature but this doesn't seem to clear the clatter. We have replaced the temperature sensor and the same thing happens.

We've put a new battery in and now it won't start at all. If we use a bit of easy start, it starts but with a clatter. We've also cleaned the EGR valve and the MAF sensor.

The only thing I can think is that maybe there is a short / damage between the sensor and the ECU, causing the glow plugs not to work correctly? However this is a completely uneducated guess.

Dad doesn't have too much cash and relies on the van to get about, so I am keen to help.

The VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] if that helps with the ID?

Thanks in advance

Hi and Welcome.

I'm a little tied up on various other issues right now, but for the benefit of other members who may want to chip in, the engine concerned is a:

DISPATCH I & II TYPE 800 VAN SHORT 1.9 D 71 (DW8B) Manual gearbox 5, built 17th July 2006 with Lucas pump.

Hi all

Bit of an update, we've had the ECU tested and that all seems to be working as it should but still no luck in tracing the fault. Someone has said it may be the fuel cut off solenoid?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where it is?

The fuel cut off solenoid will be on the fuel pump which will be on the front left of the engine.

If the stop solenoid is faulty though the engine won't run at all as there will be no fuel.

Could it bee an air leak in the fuel line from the tank? Perhaps fit a bit of transparent hose near the pump to check for bubbles.

If the plumbing is anything like the C15, the fuel line between the filter & pump IS clear - although that might not be immediately obvious!
