Berlingo towbar fitting

Post by Raul »

Hello

I want to fit a towbar for berlingo 2.0 hdi. Mechanically I think I can fit it myself but electrically I am not very sure. I read from somewhere that they need a special relay, otherwise the BSI could get damaged. Many places I took a price offer said that this car does not need a special relay so eventually I decided I do not trust anyone but myself to get the job done. I also talked to Citroen dealer but they said they do not fit towbars for cars this old( 2003).
I need a 13 pin socket. What is the easiest option to install it. I read that there are car specific wiring kits that does not require soldering or cutting into existing wiring loom. I wonder how much a genuine Citroen wiring kit could be.

If you post up or PM your VIN for the Berlingo, I'll have a look at the official kits for you and the pricing. The dedicated kits can interface with the vehicle's safety systems like the ESP / ABS ECU which applies a special programme for towing as one example - and can also activate / deactivate the reverse parking system if fitted etc.

Thanks. Which one of those towbars is rated for the highest load? Or are they the same. I looked for bosal towbar and one was rated for 1100 kg of towing and the other was for 1350 kg.

I contacted with Citroen dealer and our price here for the part 942871 is ca 222£. The alternative is part 942891 which is 80£. But the latter has different socket although both should be 13 pin. They recommended to use the cheaper kit and change the socket either on the kit or on the trailer. So what do you think about this idea to go with the cheaper option and to install a proper 13 pin socket. I am a little bit concerned about opening up a socket. Can I get it waterproof afterwards?

£53.60 here for the 942891 part. This one is 7/13 pin and does not have the blown bulb detection so is cheaper
£90.00 here for the 942871 part. This one has the Blown bulb detection.

I would suggest that you tell them you have checked the parts on Public Service Box and these are the prices. I can't believe they can justify double the price outside of the UK - they come from Europe anyway - something not right there.

Here is the evidence:

Which complect would you choose? Does not the blown bulb detection give additional trouble? What about LED lamps on trailer.

I wonder can I buy from UK dealer.

The blown bulb detection probably won't work with LED lights unless they are designed to work correctly with bulb detection systems. LEDs don't provide enough resistance so will trigger alerts all the time. If it's not important go for the other option.

As for towbar choice - that will be down to preference and looks / convenience of removal etc.

My preference is removable swan neck despite the extra cost. They look so much neater although you do have to find somewhere to store the swan neck when it's not in use.

I fitted the towbar( 9627cc) today and tomorrow is the time to fiddle with electrics ( 942891 ). The mechanical part was pretty straightforward and it seems that most of the electrical part should be also plug and play. There are though some points regarding insturction manual I would like to have a better understanding before attempting to get the job done. I found the inctruction manual in the berlingo forum:
https://www.berlingoforum.com/attachment.php?aid=3132

On page 6 there is an explanation how to connect the permanent live. As I understand it there are two options where to install the permanent live - gray unit or black unit. I have to open it up and fit the permanent live wire into this unit. Is there one free slot available for this wire or are there many free slots available and therefore a possibility to connect this wire into the wrong slot?

On page 12. Do I understand it right that into the Voie 2 I have to connect 2 blue wires?

I would also like to question about the rubber boot( page 9 picture 35) . I tried ( just for practising) to feed the wires through it but the end part of this boot is so tight that it seems impossible to get those wires through it. I quess I should open this up with a suitable pipe?
