C5 registered 2008 on; can headlights be switched to driving on right?

Post by rmunns » 09 Sep 2018, 13:57

Three questions, really:

1. Can UK-spec. C5 headlights be switched to dip to the right instead of to the left?

2. Do all C5s (2008 on) have two reversing lights, one each side?

3. Do all C5s (2008 0n) have two high vis. (rear fog) lights, one each side?

I ask because I may buy a UK-spec. C5 (after 2008) for use in France. New MoT rules in France preclude cars with rev. light / rear fog on one side (UK) only.

Maybe one or more of the above queries apply to some models, not others. I do know V6's all have two rev.lights, but don't know about other queries.

1) You'll need to change the complete units in order to comply with CT regs. Simply sticking beam masks on or lowering the headlamps won't cut it.

2) & 3) yes and yes (although the reg changes surely aren't retrospective for older cars that wouldn't nowadays comply).

Presumably this is to save money somehow. If so, could you import from another European country where they drive on the left? This would save the hassle of headlamp change.

If it's got Xenons there may be a switch next the bulb to change the direction, if its halogens, no. Done mine on the 407 a month or so ago, 70 euros from the breakers. I take it you know all the rest about importing, regarding documents? The problem with the fog light is that in the UK it's positioned on the RHS which in France is nearside. If it's got one on each side, no issues. The old regs stated that a singular fog light on the RHS was a fail, though it was never pulled up on both the BX or 406.
Paul, the price of second hand cars on the continent of obscene, so a few hours and 70 euros for the lights is well worth it. My 407 cost 650 squid, it's a 3000+ euro motor here, though since the new regs the prices are coming down a bit, a very little bit. Before anything with an CT was worth a grand, anything!

No beam switching on the X7 Xenons.

On a related matter - if buying a UK spec of that year, it is highly unlikely that the DRLs will be activated unless the previous owner has had them done. They are there and fully equipped with bulbs, but may first need activating via Lexia - and when this has been done, they will be able to be selected in the car's instrument panel display screen menu.

Thought it worth a mention as they were not activated in that year for the UK market - but may be needed in the European Federation!

Lived in FR 12 years, imported from UK 3 times. But new regs. are a big change. To get a CT (French equivalent to MoT) the car MUST have rev. light and rear fog on correct side. If fitted both sides, then that is OK.

Whatever is DRL, please?

I nearly bough a low miles UK C5 saloon exclusive 2010 for £4500 in UK. Same car here would be €9000 - 10 000. Just about double. That's why about 1 car in 20 in this region is a RHD.

DRL = daytime running lights.

They come on when the ignition is switched on and stay on all the time you are driving during the day. If combined with sidelamps then they will dim when headlamps are switched on; if there are separate sidelamps then they switch off.

If you’re going to get a set of lights for France, be aware that the designs changed on the C5 X7 Roger for both Halogen and Xenon systems from the mild facelift in 2011.

So once you’ve made your mind up on a purchase, let me know the uk reg number or VIN and I’ll be able to get the correct left hand drive headlight unit part numbers if required.
