Nigel,

Don't dismiss a 407. Basically a C5 with tin springs and they're very under-rated in my opinion..

I don't think that's completely correct.

If a car has Halogen headlights then they are separate units in the front bumper. If it has the Xenon lamps then they are not fitted at all. So you certainly won't see them on Exclusives and probably rarely (not at all?) on VTRs.

I don't see why you couldn't retrofit them though if you get a pair of a scrapper. You'd have to fit a separate switch though as the COM2000 stalk won't be correct and I'd hate to think about changing that!

paul-R wot??? now I'm even more confused. will have to pinch them of the xantia
before it goes.

I seem to like the exclusive MK1 C5 the front is growing on me little by little
at least it looks like its sort of aerodynamic. well that's just my opinion
and I know this can be a controversial subject.
I'm hoping the ride comfort is improved compared to the xantia estate.

right I've whittled it down to two models a MK1 exclusive 2.0 l diesel hatchback

or a Mk1 VTR 2.0l diesel estate rear looks nicer than hatch but that would be my only reason to buy another estate.

obviously on a budget which is best to go for please?

the VTR or the Exclusive?

cheers

Nigel.

The early C5s represent very good value for money, I bought a nice metallic red estate about 5 years ago for £550 and have recently written it off due to head gasket failure but it doesn't owe me a thing.

It was a '51 plate VSX with about 180k miles but drove beautifully, the 2.0. 8 valve engines are good for 300-400k and don't have a DPF so don't be afraid of a high miler.

My Mk1 C5 has halogen lamps and the foglights are integral with the headlight unit.

Sorry for that mistake. I knew that only Halogen headlamps had foglamps and I (erroneously) assumed they were in the bumper. Nothing to stop you putting replacement ones there of course. The lower the better for foglamps after all.

Yes it will be. All 2l HDi Mk1 C5s were 8 valve, both 90BHP and 110BHP, manual and automatic.

the 2.0 HDi 8V was the best engine of the lot and possibly the best diesel PSA ever made*... A real tough long-lived piece of diesel perfection...

*Their best petrol was the ES9 3.0 V6...

Rumour has is that somebody chucked a hand grenade into the engine bay of a 2.0 HDi 8v. It rolled out from underneath waving a white flag; the engine was just too strong for it to kill.

Right off to buy a Mk1 exclusive hatchback then, I suppose.....
although I do have a weakness for the looks of a certain 2008 Chrysler PT cruiser   #-o
but it just doesn't have the ride qualities of the Citroen.... Ho Hum... 8-[
decisions decisions....... 8-[

Thanks everyone I'll let you know my final decision soon...
