New to this vacuum lark James, but I would guess that the reservoir would stop any pulsing if the pump didn't. There must also be a non-return valve somewhere (possibly in the reservoir or pump) because when the dosers are actuated, if it was pulsed they would act like 'butterfly wings'. Also to check the vacuum operated dosers you only need to start the engine for 15 secs then it holds enough vacuum to operate them several times.
Can't fault you for persevering with the car, it gets frustrating, but you know the normal issues. Like you said, you could spend a few thousand, and it goes 'pop'

I don't think the C5 has a vacuum reservoir of any sort (according to the diagrams Marc has posted). The pipe from the pump goes to a two way splitter, which in turn go to electro valves (blue for EGR, grey for Turbo), and then head off to their respective devices. The relevant issues the Lexia shows suggest that neither the turbo or the EGR are working (inconsistent air and exhaust gas issues).

I DON'T know if the pump is pulsing, it is that (with the pipe disconnected) I was not getting an even sound but something that sounded more like a 'put-put-put' sound. Whether that gets evened out when the pipe is connected I don't know, and (as I don't have a suitable vacuum gauge) I have no way of telling.

You'll know if it has a reservoir, which I would suspect it does, because in Lexia, to test anything vacuum operated it will tell you to start the engine for 15 secs, then turn it off. If Lexia tells you this and the relevant stuff can be tested multiple times it has a reservoir. Regarding a vacuum gauge, has Michel got some carb balancers? You could probably make one with a suitable length of thin pipe in a 'u' and some water, just don't suck it in!

I will suggest that (in light of my experience) anybody who has to remove the rear wiper arm (and finds it has seized in place) purchase a nut splitter like the one in the link (I have no connections with the seller), then carefully cut the plastics away from the metal collar, and then use the nut splitter on the collar. Then take a wire brush to the splines, and you should then be good to go. I intend to also put a little bit of lith-moly grease on the splines, to try and prevent the new wiper arm binding into them.

Even better is to use the proper tool for the job. This is specifically designed for removing wiper arms and the like without obliterating anything else.

True, but (with the level of rusty adhesion between the arm and the spindle) I think that, in my case, that would have damaged the plastic arm somewhat. As I had already mullered the bloody thing I had to find an alternative option, which I did. However, as the rear wiper arm is made mainly from plastic ( the collar and the spring are the only metal bits in the arm) it is likely the arm would not have handled the strain.

Redacted the second paragraph, as an orifice normally used for waste disposal managed to interfere with the communications between the brain and fingers.

On a (possibly) useful note, I now believe that the vacuum pump IS working properly. I called in to see Michel, and we unplugged the same pipe on his Picasso. The noise was the same, and the vacuum grab also seemed about the same.

Yes but the cover lifts up that covers the nut. This is what the windscreen repair people use James - it's pretty standard and no different on the C5.

But as long as you have got the thing off; it's just that there is a specific tool for this job for the benefit of others.

Does anybody know what the inner diameter for the flexible vacuum tubing is on a Mk1 C5?

I think James means the thin rubber vacuum lines that go to electrovalves and so on... probably 6mm

If they're the EGR Control Vacuum pipes, they don't show the diameter unfortunately, but 12 & 13 are comprised as a set (14) and are no longer available from PSA, but the part is 1622V4 for the 2 pipes. Obviously nothing likely to be returned on a search - so he'll have to source them independently I suspect.

I'd suggest simply cutting an inch off one of them and going to a car parts place and matching it up. Woodley Auto Factors or similar...

A couple of the pipes, solenoid end, have a different diameter than the butterfly end so it may not be as easy as buying a length of pipe, more like making one up. Why do you want new ones, are they generally deteriorated or just a sloppy fit at the end? If it's the later and you can spare a bit, chop a cm off. I do know that BX clear rigid return pipe does fit up the inside and makes a good join if that helps at all?

What I am intend to do is to replace the flexible vacuum piping where I can (such as the bits from the electro-valve to the rigid piping on the bulkheads). Although the EGR valve and the associated electro-valve have been replaced (amongst other things) she is still throwing an anti-pollution fault. I have got to put the Lexia on her again, but I will also spray Servisol contact cleaner onto any connectors that may cause this fault.

Oh, thanks for all of the help so far, and that which is yet to come. She is not right yet, but she is getting there, and that is in no small part due to the forum and the members on it.
