VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
now those with the facility know more about it than I do.
panel off looks now and looks to be easily axcessable
before I proceed do I need a new nut ?
or take one off a spare gearbox ?
or rely on loctite ?
and what torque please .
Having used a 5 speed BE box for the last 20 odd years
what causes the problem ?
a rogue supply of nuts ?
and why almost exclusively with the Piccasso apparently ?
Thanks Patrick

Right you have the standard manual box on our 2.0 90 Xsara Picasso. I've already covered this recently for another member. Procedure for checking the gear linkages and adjustment is covered here with pictures:

Patrick - I've removed the 'car and parts for sale' bit from the bottom of your post and created an advert in the 'For Sale & Wanted' section where it belongs. You can see it by clicking the following link:

This will keep this thread focussed on the Gearbox.

Welcome!
No idea what that was, but it almost certainly signals the gear box has had it! What car / engine are we talking about? Shouldn't be too hard to find a used box and fit it.

Looks like bits of the selectors. I'm afraid I have to concur with Richard.

Yes, the 'box is a basket case. Horrific damage.
As said, best to locate a good used one, maybe from a local firm that reconditions manual 'boxes, so that you'll have a warranty.

Seems that the box has all the right bits just not where they should be

Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it
Thank you, my car is a 2003 Citroen xsara picasso 2.0 Hdi, I don't drive much and rarely go into 5th gear so will just put it all back together minus all this metal. Probably be cheaper to replace the car than to replace the gearbox? Unless someone has any suggestions???
Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it
Going back years, my BX lost its 5th gear. No graunching, just one day it wasn't there any more.
I obtained a rebuilt gearbox from a colleague of a friend, swapped for a whole car (another BX), but never got around to fitting it.
The car did about another 50,000 miles like that, average fuel consumption down from 45 to 41 mpg, except towing.

Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it
I had 5th go in my CX many years ago but was able to repair it by taking the end off the gearbox.

Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it
Given that 5th is outside the main box, and there is only a small oil transfer hole, it seems very unlikely those are bits of the 5th gear cluster - looks more like parts of the final drive to me. I'm very surprised the box is not howling like a banshee or otherwise complaining loudly, or failing to proceed at all! If the car is other wise in good condition then fitting a used box should only be £300 - £400 - plus a clutch if you think one is needed. Any car at this value is likely to be a total shed, so unless the car is knackered, I would consider sourcing a used box and getting it fitted.

Re: Car jumping out of 5th gear and now unable to select it
Thanks guys, no sound whatsoever apart from a crunching sound if you try to go into 5th gear. The car is not worth much so not worth the hassle I drive only couple times a week. I will just buy a another car the sold girl has done 183,000 and has been used more by my family than me.
