C4 Grand Picasso EGS Gear selection problems

Post by macster »

Hi. New to this forum but in need of a genius!! Parked my C4 Grand Picasso HDi EGS one night, next morning no gear selection available!
No warning, no on-going problems known. Engine starts and runs fine, but when any gear is selected it flashes momentarily on the screen and reverts to "N".
Fault code P1755 detected but that indicates a multitude of sins, nothing specific, so I guess my question is :-
Has this happened to anyone else and how do I fix it without Citroen main dealers charging me a small fortune to replace everything blanket style ?? :rofl2:

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

There is one thing you could do. Look in the following post, find who is nearest to you, and then ask them if they could help with their Lexia system;

Sometimes a net search can help. It might be as simple as dropping the battery for half hour.

Oops, forgot about the BSI reset. This also might help;

There is a clutch reprogramming procedure on the Lexia, we find that when it is required, the clutch & DMF are ready for replacement.

Thanks everyone.
Tried the battery reset with no avail. But a life data check showed one rear wheel traveling at 128kph with vehicle stationary! Does this shed any light?
The permanent code I have is P1755 which equates to clutch actuator or intermediate speed sensor among other things according to which data base you extract the information.
I'm tying the ISS with the life data reading !
Am I barking up the wrong tree??
I'm capable of changing anything on the car if only I knew what to change. I don't have endless funds to change everything linked to the gearbox and clutch until it works again!!
WHY IS THERE SO LITTLE KNOWN ABOUT THESE CARS?

Well, they are fairly new, so it will take time for knowledge to get onto the forum. However, at a guess (guess, mind you), I would suggest an ABS sensor has thrown a wobbly. However, I am not sure how to test for this. Something that might help is to jack up each wheel in turn, connect up the Lexia (I am assuming you have one, based on the info you posted), go into the ABS systems, see if you can find anything that relates to wheel speed, and then get an assistant to rotate each wheel to see what the Lexia says.

The reason I suggest this is that when Gracie had a problem with her ABS (cracked reluctor rings) we tested the ABS this way after the rings were replaced, and we could see what speed the system believed the wheels were turning at. I wasn't the one who went into the menus (CitroJim did, with his system), which is why I don't know exactly where to look. I hope this helps.

Still, when an expert sees this I am sure they will be able to give better advice.

Cheers I'll be sure to try that first thing tomorrow.
Do you know wether or not this would be the cause of the symptom of the car not going into gear??

I wouldn't know for certain, as my knowledge stops at the Xantia. However, it seems reasonable that this would be why, as the ECUs cannot determine what speed the car is actually doing, so it (in effect) goes into safe mode. Still, I am sure somebody with more knowledge than I will be able to give better advice.

Have you looked on c4 owners forum. They know more about these although the forum is not that easy to navigate. I would think you will find a lot more knowledge there.

I'm pretty sure that if it is confused about the speed it will spit the dummy about the gear box! I'm surprised the ABS light is not on..... What happens to the speed reading if you disconnect the relevant ABS sensor? Check the ring on that wheel for dirt / cracks (or missing!). Not sure how easy it will be see - looks like it is on the back of the hub. Looking at service.citroen it appears that the ring is available separately, but astonishingly, the disc is only available with the hub - and they cost £90 each :shock: Suspect it needs a new sensor - I wonder if the connectors are near one another and you could swap them over and see if the fault moves side?

C4owners is all very well, but there is not much DIY on there, just lots of people saying "take it to the dealer", and "took it to the dealer and it cost £lots" :)

Bolt on new actuator with appropriate greasing, snug up to release arm and mark position. Now push forward exactly 3mm ftom your marks and tighten bolts. This is your pre-load.

There's a link in the thread I posted above to the procedure for a C2 - imagine the C4GP will be similar.
