Bad luck....

If you haven't tackled it yet, some info in my C4 tips post: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 11&t=42809" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and also on Citroenmad's blog http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... start=1745" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not nearly as hard as it seems. Although if the turbo is OK, then you won't need to take it off, but I think you will need to drop the DPF/CAT to get enough room to get the sump out, but you might manage with just splitting the joint at the flexi.

Surely if it's only 6 months since you had the work done on your car, Dave, it'll still be under warranty from the dealer?

Here's a quick update. I've spent the last few days getting a car because I can't do without transport, taxis cost me £15/day. Yesterday I picked up a nice 2001 Reno Megane Scenic 1.4 petrol with 64k. Smells a bit doggy inside but has just had a new cambelt and water pump. When I picked it up I went straight to the Citroen dealer (who are no longer Citroen dealers!) which was only 5 miles away. I saw the same girl in service who has booked it in to be looked at tomorrow. Since buying this car I have done 5800 reasonably steady miles in it and it has blown two turbos. I'm sure deep down inside there is a lovely reliable car screaming to get out.

I had partially stripped it ready to do the job. There is play in the turbo spindle so I'm fairly confident the filter is still inside the banjo bolt. This is very annoying as I sat down with the service manager last time I was there just before Christmas and discussed with him what causes the turbos to blow on these engines. Once this job is done properly I KNOW this will be a good engine, but as Lighty said if you don't remove that filter it will go again in 3000 miles and do I now keep it or move it on? So once again we are in "will they won't they?" no man's land. Stay tuned for the next thrilling installment.

I hope you get this sorted, I've got a 2009 berlingo 1.6 hdi 75bhp with 106k on and it's never had anything other than servicing at 12k intervals and consumables etc, I hope I'm not speaking too soon :?.

It's odd how some run to great mileages and others pop at 30-40k. I wonder if some dealers do actually remove the filters before sale as it would certainly be in their interest. Lets face it the engine is not bad at all really providing it gets regular low miles oil/filter changes. It's the stupid oil feed filter and injector fixings that cause all the trouble.

I took the car over to the dealers this morning, it's about 8-9 miles. Driving the first couple of miles it was perfect then all of a sudden ding ding ding, oil can on the dash. The engine was getting noisy so I put it in neutral and rolled whenever I could. Luckily the roads were quiet so every time I stopped at lights or junctions I turned the engine off, I kept the revs down and when I got there it was fairly rattly (not knocking). This didn't feel like turbo to me although there was play on the shaft the other day. I remember reading all the posts about this problem and the need to remove the sump and clean the strainer and remove all the crud. I also remember when the turbo blew at Christmas that Citroen didn't want to know about it but the dealer said they would definitely sort it for me. I wonder if they did a quick job and just swapped the turbo because they had to stump up the cash? Anyway I had a call this afternoon, they want to keep it for further investigation because they think the strainer is clogged up. They are also going to talk to Citroen.... I think we've been here before, So this looks like it could be quite drawn out again. Since the turbo blew I have done 3000 miles and now this. How can the strainer clog up in such a low mileage unless it wasn't cleaned properly before? If anyone knows please tell me because I am at a loss to understand it. They said they will ring me on Monday, stand by.

I don't want to sound critical, but was it really a good idea to drive it 9 miles with a known loss of oil pressure and/or turbo failure ? If the oil pressure was that low you might have just written the engine off or made the repairs that much more extensive. Just saying...

(Having written off a turbo and caused serious big end bearing wear from running low on oil for only about 20 miles I speak from painful experience - I wouldn't consider driving any distance with a low oil pressure warning light)

Well they rang me today. They fitted a new oil filter, still the same. No sh*t Sherlock! It took all day to do that? #-o They fitted a new filter 3k ago when they did the turbo.

You might want to polietly suggest they drop the sump, and clean the oil pickup: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =3&t=47832" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Actually at dealer rates, it's not worth cleaning it, a new one is only £15.

If it runs OK again, and unless they fit a new engine, I would get shot of it soon as it comes back, as I fear for the long term health of the engine.

Yes they were doing that today Richard and ringing me back. No call though. Pleased to say the Scenic is running great. I fitted four new coils to it tonight as the screen washer decided to wash the ignition system! Not good. Fitted two washer jets and a metre of tube.

There's something ironic about that, given the Scenic's dire reliability reputation... this was not lost on us in January either when I was replacing the turbo in our 6 year old 70k C4 Picasso, whilst the 13 year old 160k Xantia took the strain....

1.6 Hdi turbo feed modification

Post by CGATCX25GTITURBO »

Just sharing my findings while doing a 150k, 10 year service on our Picasso 1.6 HDI.

She's done 85k, oil and filter changed yearly at each MOT or 12k which ever arrived first, looking at the reports on here, as well as doing the belts I bought the feed pipe, banjos oil pick up in anticipation of seeing the worst.

Suprisingly easy to do following advice from here, even though I have the BOL. :) Anyways, dropped the sump and other than black residue of the old oil in there, the strainer was clear and no evidence of carbon lumps whatsoever. The lower banjo bolt has a steel filter around hole that feeds the feed pipe, again that was clear as a bell. I swapped all the parts any how and did take the filter out of the new bolt though.

The belts were again really simple (I have a cheap clarke electric impact wrench, crank bolt fell off), hardest bit was the bolts holding the mounting to the head due to the limited access.. again the old belts looked great, still had the part numbers on them (I've had this car since 12k miles and know it's history) only issue I did spot, even though the coolant level has never been topped up, there was evidence the water pump was showing signs of getting ready to let go.

So it seems all good and I'll just continue doing what I've been doing re the maintainance.

On the original subject of this post re removal of the turbo oil filter. I have been running Citroen TDs since they came out the first one being an '86 CX Safari and to my knowledge none of them had a filter in the turbo feed and in all that time and over half a million miles I have never had a turbo fail. Oil changes in those days were at 5k or 6k miles - enough said?

They still have the Berlingo and have fitted a new strainer. I rang them last week and they said they were waiting for THE OIL!!! Oh Come ON!! Is that the best they can come up with? They were also talking to Sales to see who was going to foot the bill. In other words no one wants to pay including me!

I was informed a few days ago the Berlingo was ready to be picked up. I went over yesterday and asked if they wanted to keep it as I didn't want to risk using it again. Today they gave me £3.5k for it, I was happy with that. I doubt very much if the job has been done properly and envisage the next unfortunate owner having problems. I hope I'm wrong....
