wife just bought a 55 plate C4

Post by boristhespie »

wife just bought a 55 plate C4 1.6 diesel at 79500 miles.

You know I don't even know what model. Had alloys and cruise control etc. The car was tight and engine good but to tell you the truth I thought I hear knocking in the drivers rear. Having had trailing arm issues in C5s it stood oit BUT there is no telling some women! ; )

That's joke. More like there's no telling the French!

So a few quid lighter I hope this is gonna be ok. If not she'll have to deal with it. I've enough with my s**t C5's brake problem. I feel in mind to get another. Bummer is prices are SO much more expensive up here!

Hey, she is French, bound to be a little patriotic and perhaps slightly biased.

We bought one earlier in the year - same engine size as yours but the SX model which is the basic one. So far we have had no trouble with it - lively engine with good acceleration and good fuel economy. It really is a great car and I like driving it. I hope you enjoy yours!

With your mileage will you be changing the cam belt? I know the cars have ridiculously long recommended mileages for cam belt changes but I'd be interested in your thoughts.

She was told it didn't need changed till over 100,000.

What the concensus here?

Cambelt change will add a fair few bob I presume?

C4 rear suspension is not the quietest - my Parent's one was quite thumpy over the bumps.

1.6 HDi belt change interval is 150k/ 10 years. Not heard of a failure so I'd keep driving it. Much more likely the turbo will lunch itself before the belt gives out  Many get changed before that as they have a tendency to go noisy - ours chirrups from cold, but it's not got any worse in 20k miles. Might change it next summer....

Thanks, that's reassuring.

Needs a new catch for the glove box. Need to get a part number.

Doesn't look like the catch is available separately, and the price is not likely to please you! Post up the last 8 digits of the VIN and I'll get you a part no and price.

Check out the C4 Forum for Glove Box issues. You have to get the whole thing - think it is around £70

There is a weakness in the catch - a warning about not overfilling the therefore putting pressure on the catch. There is also a suggestion of how to make it stronger - lots of pics and very helpful from memory.

I have a C4 (VTS petrol) & love it. Citroen do a fixed price for cam belt which is very reasonable, but as said they don't tend to have problems like VW. The glove box catch is well known & C4ownwers.org has a fix for it if you still have the handle. I fixed mine over a year ago & it's still fixed. I think if I hadn't had the handle I'd have made one from aluminium sheet or something similar as the lids go for over £100 on ebay. Mine also had an advisory last MOT for rear arm bushes, but no clunking, my mechanic reckons they last ages even after they start clunking so don't worry.

Enjoy the car!

The suspension is a bit noisy on these. The biggest issue on them is the turbo. I would change the oil at no more than 10000 miles or a year, if not sooner, and use the oil that is recommended, it's the most important thing to do on these. Otherwise decent cars, I love mine

I would halve that mileage. As it is a simple DIY job it won't break the bank.
A lot cheaper than a cabbaged turbo either way.
