Antifreeze question

Post by spako »

Which antifreeze do you recommend for topping up coolant in my 2009 C5 1.6 HDI?

I've checked the manual and service book and didn't find a word about the recommended antifreeze fluid type.

I'll be doing full service at the weekend and was going to top it up myself.

If I don't find the right answer on the coolant type, then the visit to stealers will be the answer.

Yes ive found dealer prices on lhm, antifreeze etc to be very good, your car should have a label under the bonnet either stuck around the engine bay somewhere or hung around the cooland reovoir but i would guess it should take oat long life antifreeze.

Yup I believe it is the orange/pink OAT stuff.

What colour is the anti-freeze currently in it? If its blue then it'll be the older 2 year stuff.

If its pinkey/orangey then it'll be longlife OAT.

Hi all

Just out of a matter of interest, what do people think of Evans Waterless Engine Coolant?
Picked up a leaflet at the NEC Classic Motor show, not seriously looking, but interested?

Cheers

It looks good, i was thinking of getting some for the xm when it goes back on the road, it lasts for ever and will stop engine corrosion dead in its tracks which should mean your head gasket, water pump etc could potentialy live longer, also you can run the engine hotter without issue.

Just checked it and it seems to be the orange ish on.

Will pick up a bottle from the dealer tomorrow.

The thing I worry about is I've been careful with coolant changes every two years and not sure about leaving anything in longer?
Although head gasket and water pump etc lasting longer appeals?

You have to change coolant regularly as the anti freeze/corrosion inhibitors needed when using water as a coolant break down over time and so need replacing, unfortunatly this means adding more water which is corrosive, by using a non water based coolant i would guess your dont need so much corrosion inhibitor as the liquid your using wont be made of corrosive oxygen, equaly if you use a substance that naturaly has a very low freezing point there is no need for antifreeze either.

One other plus point is with this stuff it boils at about 280c so there will be no kettling and therefore you wont be as prone to hot spots in the engine, the cooling system will also run at a lower pressure to due to the higher boiling point, in fact you could run it with an open system with no issues. the only drawback i can see is the price, the xm takes 12ltrs min which means i need 3 4 ltr bottles as a minimum at £40 a shot.................

It is tempting Dean, and even though the £40 is a lot in theory its a once hit and a lot cheaper than a head gasket?

I went to a local Citroen dealer for antifreeze. The guy took my reg no and brought 3 litres of blue "Pro" antifreeze with Citroen logo on it (even though Citroen had put red/orange one on last service).

What's the difference between red and blue antifreeze? Which one is better?

What's the correct procedure of changing the coolant? Where is the draining plug located?

BTW, is there any web site with DIY guides for C5?

Any info greatly appreciated.
