Just a thought, is there ACTUALLY oil in the intercooler or is this an assumption from looking at the outside grime?I would've thought that any fluid would have been sucked thru into the intake if that were the case, considering just how much airflow is going thru intercooler.

Any white/blue smoke?

The intercooler isn't filled with oil, no. But the pipes always tend to get a very fine film of oil on the insides, maybe a tiny bit of blowthrough from the turbo bearings. This is nothing to worry about, and also helps when looking for a leak.

I think there is always some oil passing through the intercooler, however im not sure how much is normal.

There is no other place the oil leak could be coming from other than the bottom of the intercooler or the pipework to it.

No, there is no smoke from the exhaust.

Well ive found and fixed the leak.

The pipe had came loose going into the intercooler, i tightened up the clip and it seems to have stopped leaking. I will keep an eye on it but it looks to have been the cause of the problems. I cant find a split in the pipework or a problem with the intercooler itself. Hopefully that has done the trick.

Ive been out in this C5 today, the loose pipe was obviously the cause of the leak, slow performance and poor economy.

Its performance is now restored, much more lively and easier to drive. There is a fairly steep bank which i have to use often and as there is a roundabout at the bottom it was struggling to get up with decent speed, reaching 60-65 at the top was a tall order. Now its much quicker at the top, 75-80 much easier, same as the VTR 110.

After tripping the computer i got 50MPG, much improved over what it was doing.

I do like the simple fixes

Sid, if yours is leaking in the same place i suggest you loot at it, as this slightly leak is obviously enough to effect boost with a noticeable drop of performance and economy. :)

Thanks for the tip Chris, I'll check it out at the weekend, my performance feels fine, well IMO its fine, but I'm struggling to get 45mpg so clearly something wrong.

If the pipe turns out to be ok, what are the odds of being possible to repair the inter-cooler, with something like chemical metal?

Well performance had kind of slowly dropped off this C5, but it was noticeable how much it had to be worked to gain or keep at any speed. It was still bearable though.

Not sure about repairing intercoolers, probably better to get a new one or reconditioned one?
