2.0 HDI 110 chipping

Post by ebod »

My dTI Laggy got shunted last week and is a write off , so I'm on the lookout for a high mileage (but mint ) Cit.

I don't need another family sized car , but I'm on the motorway a lot so I still need something reasonably comfy. So I've narrowed it down to a Xsara or a C5 circa 2001. The stock 110bhp Xsara has a 0-60 of 10.0secs which is pretty handy.

I just wanted to know a) things to watch for on both cars ( heard they have weak clutch bearings & dodgy damper pulleys )

and b) has anyone ever done any electronic mod to their 110HDI , if so what cost and was is immediately noticeable and...worth the money.

( I'd love to outdrag an A3 Audi TDI in a Xsara...... )

Saw this site on ebay -

...claims to be able to reprog ECUs via the OBDII port, instead of soldering new chips on the board. Is this poss on HDI ECUs or is the website bluffing. If not, then £175 quid seems a ripoff for reflashing a rom.

I had a problem with power loss on my Xsara HDI 110 last year, which after many visits to a dealer and non-franchised citroen garage, was reckoned to be a failed turbo. Citroen wanted an arm & leg to renew the whole turbo, so tackled job myself and sent my turbo to a specialist for inspection/repair. They found after several checks on their equipment that there were minute pinholes in the vacuum chamber of the wastegate actuator which they thought might account for the ECU detecting a fault and detuning the engine to protect itself. Citroen won't sell the actuator separately, but the specialist managed to source a secondhand one.

After refitting the unit everything was fine and as a treat for the amount of hard work removing and refitting the turbo ( a pig on this car) I treated myself to a chip tune. I used sp-tuning.co.uk who use a German system (Speedbuster) to remap your ECU via the OBD port (they also give you a CD with a copy of your original map and offer to reinstall it free if the need arises). Results were great - more power and the turbo kicks in at lower revs which makes it so much more driveable. Thoroughly recommended, and no problems after nearly 20,000 miles of hard use :D

SP tuning also advertise on Ebay from time to time (which is where I found them) and will travel to you if you wish.

I emailed sptuning awhile back about tuning my xantia 110. They quoted £225, done at home or place of work. Will probably vary, depending on where you live, but unlike black boxes isn't obvious the car has been chipped.

I have a East Coast Racing box. Very expensive at nearly £400, but today having replaced my air filter (18k since last time) and the car is flying!

Easy to drive gently, but if you plant your foot it takes off like a scalded cat! No change to fuel economy either!

I passed my MOT with very low emissions too.

I can't think of anything negative to say.

That's what you need. I had the same thing done on my 90bhp hdi. It's now up to a claimed 115bhp and it whips our company 110 bhp pug 405 estate. I would strongly recommend doing it to a 110 the results must be amazing as they are quick anyway. My turbo cuts in at lower revs and gives more boost making a lovely whooshing sound. Also my fuel consumption is at worst the same and more often than not better. It is also safer as overtakes are easier also it keeps revving past 3000 rpm instead of dying on it's arse. The only thing is that it must be a Bosch injection system.

Sorry I'm going on so much but it really has been worth every penny and I can't stop raving about it to anyone who can be arsed to listen. It cost me £200 that included the guy coming to my house (from HINCKLEY) to do the re-map can't be bad. Just e-mail Jamie at Sp-tuning he is really helpful. Oh by the way I bought it off e-bay.
