C5 facelift hatchback, weather seal on tailgate failed.

Post by Bob_V »

I have had three C5 Hatchbacks. On each one the tailgate weather sealing strip has failed in one way or another. The first two were sold before they were replaced.
Has anyone gone through the process of replacing this weatherstrip? On my current C5 (a recent acquisition) it really needs replacing. The part number is 8707 C1 and they appear to be readily available. Looking at the tailgate it seems that the tailgate should be removed in order to replace the strip. I hope not but suspect it is the case.
I really need some advice as to how to tackle this job and am reluctant to take it to the local Main Dealer.

I've had a look and there doesn't even seem to be a mention of this in any of the stripping procedures - it's just a rubber seal - so won't it just press - on like the door apertures?

There's one here for £42.99

Thanks Marc,
I'm not sure, but I thought it was stuck on with some sort of 'goo'. Also there does not seem to be much room along the top of the rear window to get my stubby fingers in. I will have a closer look to see what the situation is like as soon as I can. Mine has been repaired with some sort of black tape so I will have to strip that off first.

Thanks for the link. That seems to be the cheapest one around and in the UK too. It will need to be replaced so perhaps I should buy one to see what it looks like. Maybe then I will be able to make a better assessment. Could be it is self adhesive. We shall see.

Marc,
Sorry but it looks like I have the wrong part number. Checking the description on the link you gave it states that 8707 C1 is the seal that is attached to the body and the tailgate closes onto it. The part I was looking for is the seal that is glued to the glass of the tailgate. Back to square one.

Ok, so my understanding is that the glass itself is bonded to the body like the front windscreen. Is it possible you are referring to the trim that then goes on top of this, see diagram below, part 22 (depending on trim colour).

Actually, just looking at a photo, there isn’t anything on top of the outer rear window glass, , so those trim parts must be the internal ones of the tailgate - you can just see them through the rear window in this picture - the large side plastic trim. So apart from the weatherseal which is the flexible rubber tubing that goes on and round the lip of the lower and side parts of the boot, I can’t see what else it could be Bob:

I've got that diagram too but I can't seem to identify the actual part required. The weather strip in question appears to be bonded to the tailgate glass and forms a secondary seal between the glass of the tailgate and the body. I really need to look again in the daylight as I am working from memory at the moment.

Just seen the photo. That's my car!!! Correct colour and everything. Someone has nicked the rear wiper already.

Looking at the photo, between the edge of the rear screen and the body along the top and down the sides there is a gap. This gap is sealed with a weather strip that is glued to the window. That is the seal I am talking about.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

No problem Bob, I just pick d that photo up from Gumtree!

However, I’m almost certain that you can’t do anything about the glass as it is literally bonded in place, short of having it replaced. The only thing I have on this is the same as a windscreen fitting company would do, use a wire to cut through the bonding, after the internal trim has been removed. It would have to be all cleaned out and the new bonding sealant applied.

If you have an actual leak, it might be worth trying to put some black or clear sealant down the sides.

If you have fully comp insurance windscreen cover does cover all the windows, but it would have to be cracked and too large for a repair to be replaced for the cost of the windscreen excess.......

Thanks, looks like i'm just going to have to clean it up and trim it as best I can. It seems that it is some form of secondary seal. The main seal is the one I mentioned in my initial post 8707 C1 which will probably keep the water out. This is possibly why I ignored it on my other C5s. It is just that I am trying to get this car to be as good as I can get it. I love this model of C5 and want to keep it as long as I can.
