Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
Right,
The fbh fitted to the HDI, can it be forced to run from a lexia for testing to make sure it works and if not at least I'll get a fault thrown up hopefully!!

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
I believe (but I am NOT certain) that the Lexia can see auxiliary heaters if fitted. I have seen something about them in a global scan.

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
I have never ever played with one in lexia before but have seen the section so am wondering if they allow some testing or such like of the whole unit and if so what test?

Pass. Gracie doesn't have any, so I have no way of knowing how they are tested. I just remember seeing something about them, possibly in a 'comfort' section?

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
I DO know you can test the cooling fans on an HDI, as I have done so. Bit weird though, as on slow speed both turn, but on high speed only one turns. Not a fault, as with the A/C on both fans turn at high speed. Based on this, it is possible you can test the heater, but the engine might need to be running, as the heater needs the coolant to be circulating for it to work.

I've not seen any Lexia successfully access the heater but it can be tested by linking out its

Control relay in the engine bay fusebox. The relay is controlled normally by the engine ecu and it'll kick the heater into life if the air is below 9 degrees and the coolant below 60 degrees.

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
As Jim says you can't fire up the heater with Lexia, just bridging the relay but you must have the engine running. The usual problems that stop the heater running are a duff glow plug, non running venting fan or clogged gauze. If the heater hasn't run for a while it's worth removing it so that you can upend it to empty it of diesel as they can fill up in which case it'll never run. For further info these heaters are used in VW Transporter minibuses so a quick search should reveal all, failing that if you get stuck I might be able to find some for you.

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
So they fill with fuel and won't run! That's stupid!
Does it have no built in pump? I'm just wanting to fire it up to see if it runs. The ones in the rangeys seem light years ahead in comparison
Well best to go and have a play tomorrow when I have a chance.
Any idea which pins need shorting to test fire it up does anyone know?
I know from past reading any fbh needs to be run red hot every now and again otherwise they clog with soot and crud
Fired up the rangey one this morning and by golly is it worth its weight

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
Yes it has an in line pump just prior to the heater, the heater in your Range Rover is more than likely the very same unit,,,,KP wrote:Does it have no built in pump? I'm just wanting to fire it up to see if it runs. The ones in the rangeys seem light years ahead in comparison

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
Ahhh so the engine doesn't need to run! It can be set to fire and circulate heat within the engine cooling system, albeit upto about 80-90'c before the stat kicks in and let's it go to the front radiator....
This does sound promising!!

Re: Auxiliary Heater testing Fuel Burning Heater
You do need the engine running to test as if the water is not circulating through the heater it'll very soon cut-out due to the over-temperature sensor operating.

But if it has a pump Jim is that not circulating or is the pump on a different circuit?
