Rubber ring on front gaiter.

Post by uhn113x »

Hi Folks,

Just been renewing my GSA driveshaft gaiters - in the kit from the front ones there's a rubber ring for something - no idea what it's for!
I'm sure when I've done this before there were none of these.

Anyone any idea, please? :?:

If you are using ligarex straps to secure the gaiter, it fits under the strap to prevent the strap cutting into the rubber. If you're using plastic ties, then just discard.

Thanks, John,
I've seen that on http://shop.citroenclassics.co.uk/rubbe ... -243-p.asp but this one is smaller and thicker and only just fits on the shaft.
BTW, I'm using Oetiker clips as supplied with the gaiters. Normally use Ligarex and don't trust plastic ones!

Hi there Jim,

I'm fine, thanks. Even better when I get my driveshafts done!

Then there's a pile of clocks and a Dynatron radiogram to sort ...

How did I ever have time to work?

I'll be at NVCF, Jim. Always go there and stay overnight at Mikey405's on Saturday in Solihull.

As for the driveshaft rings it seems that they are instead of clips. You just stretch them over the gaiter.
Makes sense at they only supply the Oetiker clips on the outer end as supplied in the box.

Still no further as I need a clip for splined end on the shaft to prevent the Rzeppa joint sliding out. Off for a bit of Googling ...

Thank goodness for Joyce's trusty Dyane!

Bump! Desperate for driveshaft clips - tried to make some but they weren't round enough. Dimensions are absolutely critical. :help2:

Mike, what are the dimensions of the groove it sits in? All I can remember is the diameter of the wire which was about 1.6mm

Hi Richard,

Sorry about the delay but 1.6 mm is right for the diameter. Both shafts are at a pal's house and he is trying to get spring in Bradford where I can cut it to make clips, but the 'real' clips would be much better if I get actual clips.
I'm blowed if I can find the dimensions of the splined shaft but the clips were 24.5 mm outside AFAIK. The inside of the gap in the spline I didn't measure but I don't think it matters providing it's enough of a gap.

Thanks for your reply,

Mike.

I've probably only got one at the minute, and it might be smaller as the driveshaft diameter changed at some point.

I put it on my "to source" list as I encountered the same issue as you as the generally available wire cross-section in that size of clip is 2mm.

OK, Richard that's fine and thanks for looking. I think the diameter of the shaft on mine is the later one.

Oddly enough, I have just had to attend to a messy nearside hub due to plastic ties being used last time round. I had to use two end on to each other, and of the correct width. The issue was where the two ties join. There is left a small area of the gaiter that does not get equal compression immediately beneath the tie strap join. Only small, but enough to have allowed grease to exude.

Having some Ligarex left over from whatever (!) I was able to use same and fully enwrap the gaiter using the two pliers technique. There is not extra band of rubber beneath the Ligarex, and from experience of past gaiter fittings, I have never seen any - nor experienced gaiters being cut into by Ligarex. I'm sure some folk may have though. As my length of Ligarex was quite a bit longer than required (and it did go round full circle twice), rather than cut off to make tidy, I covered the excess length with a couple of end to end plastic tie wraps so as to prevent centrifugal force flinging them outwards. Looks tidy enough.
