I put a link on my POTD post to Graces Guide Peter here

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=53436&start=2790#p600650

Graces Guide has the history of the Allen company from Bedford who made that engine. No reference to scythes as far as I can see. This is the type of thing ALLEN's of Bedford did/do..

Thanks Neil

Looks as though they make most things! I don't know if you remember the Allen Scythe, it was a mower with a finger bar cutter at the front and big wheels, ideal for clearing long grass but if you ran into something you couldn't see you could go right over the top of it!

I remember them from the '50s, I don't recall the engine having a make on it so wondered if it was one of theirs although they all seem to be diesel.

Just looked them up, apparently made in Cowley, Oxfordshire, spelt the same though.

Ah, Villiers, that answers the question. Looks old doesn't it. Our chief engineer had one, used to take days off during the summer to tend his strawberry field.

Seems unlikely they all crashed there, if that were so it wouldn't just be a car "graveyard"

I wonder how many of them were reported as stolen and the subject of fraudulent insurance claims?

Disused mine shafts are wonderful for dumping, bodies  , dead animals (sheep mainly around here) the left overs from butchered on site rustled wild boar, asbestos and other industrial waste.

I wonder how feasible it would be to cram them full of what would otherwise be landfill.

I think the greenies would be up in arms at that suggestion, disturbed wildlife, contaminated water supply, truck movements, etc. etc. etc.

I don't think those objections are any different to current landfill problems though.
Clearly some discrimination must be applied to avoid groundwater contamination and the evolution of methane but not insurmountable surely.

A few 'Welsh Slate' photos I took a good few years ago :)

One of the many slate caverns. One of the shafts is flooded right up, but there's a cable over the shaft where they used to haul slate up.
