The landlord has just found some dusty bound volumes of "Cycling and Moting" in the attic from 1902 to 1912. That was from the early days when the new-fangled "Moting" (car-driving) was thought to be a pastime that might replace cycling. The title changed over the years but was a forerunner of todays "Cycling Weekly".

Yes, fear not Jim, The Pickled Egg is right on trend. People apparently would prefer to meet and chat over a coffee and cake these days, than over the traditional pint. The landlord of the PE is ahead of the game and has installed one of these 50's icons of Italian Coffee Machine design, and the staff have been training on how to froth milk (soy and cow) so you can get a decent latte.

Rather than momentous occasions recorded by historians, magazines reveal issues and attitudes affecting ordinary people. Editorial comments and readers’ letters show how folks felt about things at the time. For example, a recurring theme of 1890s magazines is reports of death and injury due to riding at speed downhill – a big problem for cyclists with fixed-wheel bikes until the freewheel hub was invented at the end of the decade.

I tend to agree with the quote from the site re old magazines...there is always something interesting to be found whatever the subject. Looks like in the summer of 1897 Endurance Steel Balls were de rigueur for the cycling enthusiast

I love those old adverts Neil...

Interesting bit about downhill deaths and freewheel hubs... The fixed gear or 'fixie' was only partially the problem, the other one was lousy brakes on early bikes... They were truly atrocious....

The 'fixie' is now making a big comeback, especially with cycle couriers. Some enthusiasts say they offer a purer form of cycling..

Me personally I would rather have my 11-speed dérailleur and freewheel hub any day...

That "St Jabob's Oil" isn't shy about its claims. Should probably get a few bottles in for the next "absinthe night", should be able to sell a few just before closing time.

It doesn't seem so long ago to me that most firms offered catalogues by post on sending them an SAE (Stamped Addressed Envelope). Their ads in periodicals often had a little form to fill in and send off to make the process even easier..

I well remember doing this often as a youngster, mainly to outfits that specialised in radio and electronics clearance; often headquartered in the Tottenham Court Road.. In those days it was a Mecca for the likes of me. So different these days although ghosts remain there...
