AX fitting airco system

Post by jsp »

Hi, I have a AX here and want to fit an airco system in.

What is all required?

6457 Y4 kit?

So Far I know:

Airco pump w/ bracket
condensor
pressure regulator
fan switch 3 pin
seperate box for a/c
tubing
radiator interior
and a computer that can run an a/c?

Must say, as a quick response, most folk would not do this, and especially on an AX!
Conversion of non-AC cars to AC is pretty involved stuff, as you are finding out.
Much better to sell car, and acquire one with AC already there.
Repairing what is already there (if indeed necessary) far easier and cheaper than what you are considering.
If anything illustrates the old adage of it being infinitely more expensive to build a car from new parts, this is it.
Anything is possible, but I would just say - don't.

You may run into a few unexpected challenges. For example a forum member retrofitted ac to a xantia. He showed it to me once and I hadn't realised that xantias have a smaller glovebox than the non ac ones to allow room for some of the parts.

It will be interesting to follow your progress, nothing wrong with a challenge :) As said, fitting AC to a non AC car has been done.

I did toy with the idea of fitting AC to my XM a few years ago but then chickened out.

Will be following this with interest. Was actually considering a retro-fit on our 206 and still may do at some point in future. Did the AX ever come with air con or is it a case of adapting a car that was never built with it? If that's the case there may be issues with the heater box/fitting the evaporator but will be interested to see how it goes all the same.

I've not looked at this (service box etc) however it may be like the (first shape) 106 is, AC is generally only available on LHD models partly due to space concerns. I am aware some later RHD 106's (quicksilver models mainly?) had AC

I don't think any UK spec AX would have offered AC as an option, however other RHD markets ('down under' etc) may of done in some cases if it was sold there.

I'm just basing these thoughts on the AX being like an 'early' 106 really...

I guess most things will um 'fit' if you're willing to make them..
Andy.
