Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Apologies for posting this on fcf and auzziefrogs, i kinda need an answer pretty quick.

Today i lost my heaters in the car. No blowers, no hot / cold, no AC light, no recurulate light. Its a 306 XSi, with climate control. The little fan in the interior light holding also isnt spinning, like no power? I found a broken pipe under the passanger...

Has anyone ever seen a 406 GLX 2.0 petrol with its air box drilled? I remember when I had my 206 I drilled the box and seemed to get much better fuel economy - although it was all a bit more noisey.

does anyone know if it is possible to swap the 406 V6 manual gearbox for a 2.5td manual gearbox?
i wish to improve the gearing on my car to gain a higher top speed.
would it be better to switch to the automatic gearbox?
which gearbox has the longest final drive?
and which is the easiest to swap?
i am in germany for the forseable future and...

diesel engined cars run at lower revs, but they still have to achieve a similar top speed. so if you attach a higher revving engine to a diesel gearbox the theory is that you will gain a great deal in top speed. the gearbox should easily handle the power as a comparable sized diesel engine gives much more torque.

After trying to locate the source of a water leak into the boot of a 1995 306 hatch, I think it's coming from where the rear screen is bonded to the steel of the tailgate.

Is this a common problem? Certainly this leak is getting worse and worse, and short of de-bonding the screen, and re-bonding it, I'm not sure what can be done.

Any advice...

If you take the black plastic cover running along the bottom of the window that covers the wiper motor off, mine was wet.

The relay was badly corroded, so i had to remove the entire wiper assembly. After doing this i cleaned the glass on the boot lid, and put a bead of silicon around where the wiper motor...

I did this job fifteen years ago on a new BX which I bought, and your engine is very similar. Look on top of the thermostat housing. You'll maybe see two senders, but it could be that there's only one, with the other hole being filled by a screwed plug. In my experience,a good injector cleaner like Millers Diesel+,used a few days beforehand,a new air filter,and the old Italian tune up,before going for the test,works wonders.
I've never had a car fail emissions using the above method.

Ok i've had this problem now since i practically got the car. Its done 5k miles with these symptoms and now the weather is heading for the worse i would like to get it sorted once and for all.

Yes, sorry, this is indeed head gasket. The 1.9D engine can fail it's head gasket very very slowly, giving exactly the symptoms you've described.

I once had a head gasket fail on a 405 1.9D and it took 15k miles to completely fail.

It could well have failed just 45k miles after being done , it depends entirely on how well it was done before. If...

Did a search but didn't find anything too relevant. A mate has a 406 HDi 90 Estate and the clutch has just started slipping. He's a mite miffed as he's not had it long, though he got it cheap off a mate who's a dealer.

Hi, Just acquired this car and very clean it is too. However I have a miss fire for the first 10 minutes when clod. When hot is is fine. Coil packs measure 1.3 ohms primary each but there is a very high resistance between the secondary and anything., Is there an arch gap in these Sagem coils that causes this. My 98 406 automatic is fitted with the later model auto box with no dipstick and the gear changes arn't quite as smooth as they were.

Mate has just bought a nice 405 TD saloon, 95 N reg. 124,000 and all the toys .
No servive history though so cam belt is required. What they like to do? Any special toold needed. Got the book for Citroen Diesels somewhere, is this the same procedure?

Hey guys, im finally going to stop that bloody airbag light flashing. I know its the Connection under the front passenger seat, so my intention is to do away with the orange plug and make a direct connection. Any advice before i do this? Hi, having some trouble with my '90 405 SRi, XU9J2 with L3.1 Jetronic.

It's very intermittant, for example it will decide to stall in traffic, if you get it restarted it will run very on/off like. So if you accelerate one second it will pull nicely then completely cut out the next, basically cutting in and out very jerkily. If you sit in neutral...

I have a P reg 405 est TD with an immobiliser fitted, at some point this appears to have been disabled, ie. I don't have to put a code in every time it starts, just as well really as I don't know the code.

However sometimes the car won't charge the glow plugs which I'm guessing is either the imobiliser working partly or is a fualt in the...

Normal thing - a 2 minute job has now developed into a pain in the butt,

I loosened 2 bleed screws on the pipe running from the top of the radiator expansion bottle, one half way up on the passenger side of the engine bay and one near the bulkhead on the drivers side, and topped up the radiator, the bulkhead one is ok but I've lost the other one...

On my 406 when the plastic bleed screw snapped off (the long pipe from the rad to the fuel filter housing) they sold me a brass recessed hexagonal grub screw which got me out of the mire, apparently a popular part, and I think a Peugeot part used by the mechanics at the garage.

It may be different on the 306, but you could try another dealer,...

I had an unfortunate coming together with the back of a 205 GTi with my 405 GTDT - I managed to put it 'beyond economic repair' ... Ho hum ... all my fault but at least I'm fully comp. and managed to get a good valuation on the 405.

Anyhow, looking at replacing it and looking at the 406. Wondering about the 2.2 HDi as it seems there...

I've flushed the system of my 405 a few weeks ago because i had an air lock, and i'm now pretty sure its gone so i can put some coolant back into the system.

Only trouble is i've no idea as to the ratio or how much coolant to put in, and have no gauges to check either!

Can anyone give me a general rule of thumb?

Its a 92 405 straight 1.9D....

Of the top of my head the coolant capacity on a 405 is about 8.3 litres.

A 50 / 50 mix is the ratio to aim for.

50 % antifreeze & the other 50 % water or you can buy it already pre mixed.

You can get a little tester for a couple of £ from somewhere like Halfrauds to test the ratio of your coolant, Just count the floating balls.

When I use my car it doesn’t always want to go backwards! It either clunks or just completely locks and the back end of the car rises right up (rear brake sticking on or something??) if I park with my handbrake on then its even worse. I have to park in gear, but then it still does it but not as bad. Its fine going forwards. it’s a peugeot 306...

Similar on my 406. Hbrake sometimes operated at different positions. Stuck after Hbrake use sometimes. Skipped on LH bends.

N/S rear drum, one liner loose from shoe, must have been moving about. Tyre just about slick as it's been happening for a while but thoght the skipping was more front end as steering wheel used to snap into bend.

I found the suspect area thats letting water into the 305 i started investigating after finding a lake in the footwell :shock: it is under windscreen near where the wiper motor is ill put some pics up when i get back from work. if it keeps leaking do you reckon it will rust the floorpan under the carpet ?

Hi,

My dad's got a 92 J reg 405 1.9 GRi Estate that he is selling due to having a new car.
What sort of price would he expect to fetch for this?
It's Taxed and tested until the later part of June 06, has done about 122000 miles.

The car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That's why Ebay is such a great place to get rid of cars like this.

To be honest, even in it's no-doubt good condition, a j-plate petrol 405 is probably barely worth £200, and I have seen them sell for a lot less. Unfortunately this is more to do with what else is available on the market,...

Hello

Any thoughts on a reasonable cost for head gasket replacement on a 98 406TD?
I presume water pump and timing belt replacement are the norm but is there anything else to do whilst it is apart?

I would almost guarantee that the 3rd connection on your new alternator is bridged to the main output connection, and it is this bridge that is keeping the ignition on even when you turn the ignition off.

My 405 diesel occasionally does not turn over when turning the ignition key.

However when shorting out the BIG two starter motor terminals for 1-2 seconds and re-trying with the key, it starts.

All I hear is something rapidly spinning (like a hair-dryer) as the terminals are shorted.

It is occuring more frequently now.

From the questions you're asking, I would say the best thing to do is spend a tenner on a s/h starter, and shove it on. The starter is dead easy to change, being held on with 3 allen-head bolts, from the gearbox (the starter is threaded) and the electrical connections.

Right.... I've been asked to change the belt on one of these minor monsters. I've had a look in the autodata book of timing belts, and it all looks a bit complex, certainly moreso than a 1.9TD one.

Has anyone here experience of changing one of these? I have changed plenty of XUD belts, and a couple of TU ones, but never a V6 (XFZ?). Is there any...

I've had a good look at this, and it would appear that a good number of the special tools can be fabricated.

Having read, and re-read the procedure while looking at the engine, it is indeed a bastard of a job. Makes a 1.9TD look like the proverbial walk in the park. The main problem is that you have to peg the camshafts, while the sprockets are...

Hello there! My GF has a Peugeot 205 1.1 style . She has called me saying the battery light is coming on as she is driving. Drive belt OK; but the light glows dimly, goes off or sometimes stays on. Am I thinking that the alternator is at fault?

Simple question with a simple answer I hope! The variable speed 'intermittant wipe' feature. Is it controlled by the wiper stalk? Or is there some more electrical black magic going on I haven't thought of?

This is for a 605, but I have found a 405 stalk with this ability. I am hoping they are cross over parts!

I fitted one of those variable stalks to my old 405, You ended up with between the normal 4 & 45 second delay on the intermittent & anywhere between those two extremes.

I just plugged it straight in & it worked ok, Mine came of an STI, So did a few other rare bits.

My clutch started slipping the other week - when accelerating too hard or changing down on hills. The garage took a look and said it looks OK, it's a self-adjusting clutch and maybe it was sticking. Well it was OK for a week but now it's started slipping again! Is the garage right and any ideas what I can do to fix it?

I think i have found the answer, but I want confirmation before getting my hands dirty!

96 Peugeot 605 2.1TD

The speedo doesn't like cold mornings, sometimes it doesn't bidge, sometimes it registers the fact I am moving, sometimes it is even generous enough to show me just how fast I'm going!

I was told it is plastic gear drive in the gear box....

Put simply Quinny, if you could plip the car with the key in your pocket, then it's the RF type.

If it had to be pointed at the car to work, then it was likely the IR type.

I am replaceing my fuel pump as a fault has came up, start of injection fault according to the code reader,but im not sure which pump is suitible.

306 sedan sr 1.8 petrol. When i start the car it just seems to cough and miss when i set off in say 1st or 2nd gear. It does it alot when i put the foot right down on the gas, if i take my foot off a bit it starts to pick up, then goes fine. its as if it flooding it with petrol? new plugs needed or something else? please help

Hello Guys,

I have to do the outer rhs cv boot for my cousin on his '96 306 1.4i.
I've done the outer lhs on the bx once and this is of the whack it hard with a hammer type. The joint comes off complete and replacing the boot is then quite easy.
We took everything off but left the driveshaft on the car, can anyone confirm that the joints used...

Peugeot 406 1.9dt r reg, management light came on and i had the fault code read, The fault was with the start of injection what ever that means.

I can get it started but it feels flat when driveing it and sluggish and doesnt rev up quickly, it also run hotter than it used too.

I can flicker the ignition on and off whilst its running and then it...

Right, it's looking increasingly likely that I'm going to give up trying to keep my current 405 on the road (see other post).

So, I have a plan which I may use. I have seen a nice 1.8 litre petrol 405 on offer. Same year as mine (N-plate), and only 85,000 miles.

I could salvage anything re-usable from my current one and transfer to the new one...

I noticed today that the interlock on my Automatic Gear Selector on my '98 306 1.8LX Auto isn't working properly. Going form 'reverse' down to '3' and the interlock doesn't work at all (you don't have to press the button on the gear selector). Going the other way the interlock only fails between '3' and 'drive'. All other gear changes the button...

There is a very big warning sticker on many older Peugeots about the fact that the cooling system is highly pressurised and a flush every 2 years - less - is strongly advised. Have read all the postings and note one method missing which we used to use - that was to raise the front end of the car to a silly angle about 30 degrees to allow the air to escape naturally. we used a fork lift to do this and it did work on several specials...

my problem us I no longer have access to the fork lift... so has anyone tried...
