Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi, I've just bought a 93 205XLD. The previous owner had advised that the engine was noisy and emitted lots of smoke . He was right! I think the pump timing's 180 deg out as someone's been in about the engine I can see. Not sure for what reason.

Initially changed injectors which made no difference then it dawned on me about the timing. I know...

Hi Guys
I have a '53' 406 and the heater fan stopped a couple of days ago. What's the proper way of checking for where the fault is? I can't see any fuses that need replacing, it could be wiring, motor, regulator, connections on the switch, BUT where do I start.
Please make your explinations dumb-dumb proof, for me!

All done and we have heat again. Took the feed from the Red wire and the relay switch from the Orange. No problems with interference from any of the other electrics and the relay doesn't get at all hot.

I took my 406 1.9td to the garage today and had the following done- new belts aux and cam, new water pump, new aux belt auto tensioner. Didnt bother to try it myself as I needed the car in a hurry.

I took the car from the garage (supposedly a good reputatble indy) and with in yards started to sound a bit funny, kinda like the sound you get when...

On the last two occassions I checked the oil I found the dipstick was not fully seated in the filler cap, it had lifted about an inch. Any ideas why? Thanks

This one is 2.5 years too late, but just in case someone is chasing the topic:
Our 406 engine cover had two anti-vibration mounts sheared when we bought it second hand from a Peugeot dealer down south.
The dipstick was often out of its seat when the early and frequent visits under the hood were done to investigate the very unreliable instrument...

hi all, it looks like a 306TD mark 1, is coming my way tonight for a general filter change and to try and work out why there is no heat in the cabin...

I have got some antifreeze but have another use for it, if it's not required in solving the matrix issue.

I think the first thing will be to see if the matrix pipes are warm when the car...

I think the problem could well be a airlock; these cars can be very difficult to bleed. As Jim has suggested, you need to adapt something like a 2 litre pop bottle with the bottom cut off so it's neck fits tightly into the radiator neck. Duct tape should work. This gives you a head of water that permits the heater bleed to be sucessfully bled. I...

it appears and i can not work out why ??
Some one has fitted the wrong type of gear box linkage , the bottom short one and the top long one has been cut and welded ?
and looking at the pictures of the parts it should be they look nothing like.

I have 306 1.8i 16v XS w/AC and when stuck in traffic and fans kick in at about 95C they make a racket! Both fans are turning, but they are clattering on the shround. They both seem to have been tilted or mis-alligned.

Any rememdies? Everything is working, it's as if the bracket they are held on by has moved or something corroded.

Hi all,just had the van mot'd and the tester said it was 'well over the limit' on the smoke test.

I had this before on the 405 and after a service and a thrash it passed no problem,trouble is he didnt tell me how much over the limit it was so im wandering if anyone knows what else i can do to make sure when it goes back it flies through!!...

Assuming the EGR valve is in working order and not stuck open, and it's controlled by an electrovalve the same as a Xantia, pull off the rubber pipe from the EGR to the electrovalve and plug it so the valve doesn't suck in dirt.

I have a 2.0 litre HdI 406 YEAR 2002. I noticed the car was getting hard to start. I changed the heater plugs and it made no difference. I then started to investigate further and noticed that there is no current traveling to the plugs at all. Based on the feedback. Does anyome know where the relay is situated ? I am just thinking it its controlled by the Engine management system, then I could have good fun in finding it!! Hopfully I can just follow the wire back from the glow plugs to the relay.

Howsit :)

My mum's 307 has developed an issue upon starting. Basically, when the key is turned the engine begins to turn, but fails to fire. The process is also accompanied by a loud beep sound, but no warnings/warning lights. After a few goes the engine will eventually start, albeit with hesitation. It idles/drives fine and there are no warnings...

Hi all. I'm thinking about lowering my peugeot 405 (1993 SRDT) by about 30mm. I've read that I should be ok keeping the existing shocks and just fitting the new springs... is this correct?

Also, how easy is it to change the springs front and back?

Hello all,
I have a '92 405 TD with inter cooler. The other day it decided to rev to the point of explosion. I have never seen a car rev that high, the whole street disappeared in black smoke. It is not a sticking cable but seems to be the injection pump.
Car starts as normal, ticks over fine and then whoosh it's off again.
I am a little worried...

I believe you have a problem with a burnt out connector pin in one of the multi-connector plugs in your fuse box.

Arm yourself with a really good floodlight, so you can see whats going on in that birds nest of wires.
It may be (very) advantageous to spend the time removing the passenger seat to better access the wiring.

found label on door pillar (just bought for wife) and says 2.4bar which equates to 35lb all round, is this a bit high??

funny how some misinterpret as the car had 24lbs all round!

We have a 2.0HDi 206 which also says 35PSi all round. I found that a bit high so i set them to about 33/34 front and 30/31 back.

I always find having a difference between front and rear pressures makes a car feel more stable and gives more grip, so i never go with an 'all round' pressure.

Took the car through a ford this morning (the water variety).

Went into the ford (about 1-2ft deep) as I have done before, came out the other side to a much louder engine than normal, still seem to have plenty of power just very noisy, any ideas?

Rang the local main stealer, who didn't really have a clue, told me the air intake is really low on...

dr.lovexxx, my first thought was the cat. etc. but have had all that replaced (needed doing anyway).

I am now thinking that some insulation on the bulkhead has gone awol, as the car is running fine (well apart from a dead battery, b****y cold weather) it isn't burning oil or excessive fuel, nor is there a lack of power.

My wipers failed on my car this morning, iv glanced at the fuses and a 10amp was blown, i replaced it and the rear started working, however, the fronts are not working, all others fuses seem fine. ANY IDEAS?

Its the spade conncetors crimped on the wiring that are the problems.

I recently bought a 405 GTX TD estate, seems to be a pretty honest and tidy example. I got the clutch and wishbone bushes replaced and it's driving bob-on now. I intend to get it up to scratch within the next few months and keep it for a long time.

Connector plug will be clipped to the inside of the door - about an inch down from the start of the door trim IIRC. Take the door trim off as well as the interior mirror blanking plate thing and you should be able to find it. There will be two cables and connectors - one for the mirror switch and a smaller one for the temp connector.

Hello all. Great forum this.

My question : The ignition barrel of my 405 is busted. Can I get a new one that will work with the SAME key?

Am trying to avoid having to change all locks and only want to use one key for everything.

i have today transplanted a key blade from a new VALIO lock set into an original chiped key head on an S reg pug 306, and it fits straight in,

so we could then use the new ignition lock from the set

I want to put some new wheels on my 405 but I'm a total beginner when it comes to sizes etc.... I have a 1993 SRDT. The existing tyres say 185/65/R14.

My questions are :
1. What do each of those figures actually mean?
2. Does this mean that my wheels are also size 185/65/R14?
3. Do some dealers use other way of measuring that is 'equivalent' to...

If it's a 2.1TD 406 then don't let even one drop of veg anywhere near it!

These engines have the brilliant but very delicate Lucas/Delphi EPIC pump and it will die very quickly if it sees veg. It is deadly poisonous to it.

The same applies if it's an HDi.

Replacing a dead EPIC is a very expensive job.

Is their any merit in this comment - is it best to have an oil and water gauge fitted to monitor temperatures ?

On my Xantia I have gauges for both - if nothing else I at least can seem comparative rises in oil and water temperature.

Just to add to an old post, it's not so much the temp light coming on, as most cars don't have one, but I think you have it confused with the idiot light i.e. oil pressure light, as 99% of the time when this comes on, it is followed seconds later with the big ends knocking.

It would be of more use to fit a pressure gauge where there isn't one...

My on-going saga related to my peugeot peruses and after having a diagnostic on my 306, XL, 1994 L-reg petrol car I've been told to do the following (including members on here):

- Definite replacement of throttle body

The throttle body is the barrel located under the arrow.
You must remove the flat plastic duct and associated hosing & wiring harness.

Note : be VERY careful with the plastic stud where you have an orange zipper fitted. This stud snaps at the very moment you think it wont snap, and then you will never get the engine to run properly again :roll:

I expected the fan relays to be between the fans, as in the picture … does your car have that ?
The Bitron looks like it’s working normally because you do have two speeds.
Never known of Bitron faults, but they would show up as loss of fan operation or erratic speed changes.

My sons S plate 406 is suffering starting problems in the morning.

Glow plug relay light stays on for anything between 5 & 10 seconds.

Glow plugs replaced and are fine

Leak off pipes replaced.

Symptoms are it starts on a lumpy 3 and then after 15 seconds it runs fine.
After the morning cold start it runs fine during the day but it needs...

I have used all different makes of glow plugs in my ZX over the years & have never experienced such poor starting as I did with the NGK's....honestly give them a wide berth.

When staring the car sometimes I have to wiggle the switch a couple of mm to get the fan and aircon to switch on.

Obviously it's wear in the plastic block at the rear of the ignition switch.

Are these replaceable cheaply or do I remember a wiring mod with a relay to overcome the problem? :?:

A friend at work has just been quoted £280 for the replacement of both bottom balljoints on his 407.

Looks as though the quotes are about right then.

In fact the whole setup reminds me of the CX front hub setup, which had the upper balljoint pressed into the arm, and the lower balljoint just bolted on with 2 small 13mm head bolts.

Hi all

I have my 405 td estate (240,000 fsh) in garage and they are baffled!

The front cooling fans are coming on from switching on ignition and stay on.

After investigation and chat with Peugeot the EC module was replaced it's always that that goes and after replacing problem still there.

The 2 systems are not compatible.

Also your early one-button systems works by coding the receiver by the handsender key.
You can therefore not use your old handsender together with a new unit.

I have had a LPG conversion on a 307 and want a slim spare for my boot.
i have been told that a 206 slim spare may fit a 307?

or you could buy 4 flasher caps which are yellow plug caps with a spark gap inside, so you fit all 4 then fit the coil pack back in place and start the engine,

My 1993 309 has the manual sliding sunroof with vacuum operated seal. Rainwater is getting in somewhere in the area of the sunroof. The main seal looks fine and I've already replaced the sealing washers on the handle. The two drain holes at the front of the frame look clear. Theres also one at the back corner of the frame on the passenger side....
