Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Normal running temp on ZX D/TD seems to be just under 90 degrees, i.e. half way up the guage. The fans should be in by 92 degrees. I have a 92 ZX Diesel. Through normal use the tempeature is usally on half way or slightly over half way on the gauge, is this normal? The fans rarely cut in, but I seem to remember it used to run cooler than it does now.

Firstly; Set the suspension right to the highest setting (the one used for wheel changing)

well I replaced the cable along with the plastic clip and its snapped again,
Looks like it needs a new clutch again, only had the last one fitted last December. Has anyone else had any probs with this bloody plastic clip.

Hi Barry, 30 odd quid IS a bit steep for mud-flaps, as I found out for my Berlingo. Try Halfords, if I remember correctly they have contoured one's.

Suggest you have a look at the common problems & solutions on this forum & look at an article on cambelt change on a BX. There is a link to a web page which shows a photographic detailed description of what was done & how to do it & is pretty self explanatory. I would imagine a ZX would be fairly similar. It is worth noting, that it is recommended...

It sounds like the thermostat is sticking, this is located under the o/s engine mount, it is worthwhile getting an original quality part as cheaper ones do not have the wiggle pin, or it could be the switch to the cooling fans, remove the connections and clean up and this should do the trick.

Hi.
I had the exact same problem with my XM -90.
In my case it was the ignition module that was faulty, the car would run for about 10minutes then just die, I had to wait for at least 4 hours before I could start it again.
My suggestion is try to exchange the ignition module and see if that solve the problem

No, its not too difficult.In fact if you look at the end of the bar you will find a hole for an allen key.To be on the safeside keep the suspension pressured (I even put a jack under the wishbone to stop the balljionts spinning).Be warned , I find when you do 1 you can hear the other rattling

It depends on how mechanically minded you are and if you got the tools for the job. If you got the time and the equipment then go for it but otherwise phone around various clutch replacement people for a better quote.

My 1991 BX 1.6GTi has a problem with low RPM. Below 2000RPM the car starts to choke and bounces many times until I press the clutch down. Also at constant speed, say 50-80 Kmh, there seems to be a misfire, It does a similiar bouncing thing but with lower intensity...Also when I press the accelerator for a fast run it seems to accelerate...

This problem is usually caused by a lazy idle speed correction valve,located on the inlt manifold. Replacement is the only option!!

My poor ZX (2.0 8V, 97K L plate) is not returning to idle properly, there is no misfiring when it does pickup and there is no loss of power at all. It just dies when I release the clutch at any speed.
Its serviced regularly (every 5-6k, by me) the plugs are good, new air filter etc

Just today I traced a front end rattle to a defective ball joint on the anti-roll bar drop link. I could only get movement with the suspension in the normal position. It's temting to put the suspension all the way up when you're looking underneath! Jamie Allmond

I have a shudder that seems to be coming from the front strut/sphere housing. When I travel on rough ground there is a rattle that can be heard inside the car. The instrument bulbs aren't too difficult to get to. The cluster comes forward towards the steering wheel. You do need to unclip the speedo cable, which is fiddly.
The real pain though are the heater control bulbs. You'll probably decide not to bother after reading this... Remove all the trim around the gearstick. Remove your stereo. The heater...

Take a real close look at your engine mounts. It sounds as though one is loose or more likely gone soft or split. You sometimes need to exert a fair amount of pressure on them to test them as you basically are trying to lift & move the entire mechanicals in the process. On the early CX's the bottom mount used to go soft & cause similar...

I've changed the HT leads the, rotor and the distributor with no luck at all.
I can also see some oil leaking into the ditributor cap from the axle that the rotor sits on, can this effect the ignition so that the car can't rev more than 6000rpm???

I would be having a look at possibly three things as regards the idling.
Firstly the easy option; air leak on the intake side either where the plenum is fitted to the head or check out around (& under) same for split or leaking hoses etc. A piece of plastic hose held to the ear acts like a doctors stethoscope & if that is not conclusive, shaving...

I have a couple of minor problems. The first is that the engine has a habit of stalling quite frequently at road junctions and the like. Tick over normally is quite fast at 1000rpm.

Yes Hanyes (the muppets) have got it wrong. I did this a few weeks ago and almost destroyed the back of the panels trying to do what the Haynes manual said!

If your idle is eratic then the idle stabiliser may be faulty. If stable then suggest idle speed too low or possibly your power steering pump or something else driven off the engine is putting a higher than normal load on at low revs causing it to cut out.

I have a citroen zx 2.0 16v and I seem to have a problem with the power steering at tickover. If I am parking and I let the revs drop off whilst simultaniously turning the wheel the car dies. Its driving me mad. anyone know a fix for this. Cheers.

If all this work was done very recently, then they probably just need time to bed in. You could try driving a mile or so with the brakes on to speed this process up, although don't tell anyone I said so as this is not recommended. Other than that, the fluid may need changing.

I don't know who makes Citroen shock absorbers, but would be happy with Sachs - they have a long association with rallying. Depends what you're looking for.
Are you looking for adjustable or uprated shocks, or standard replacements? A motor factor/specialist can still probably offer these at a price competitive to original citroen parts.

My BX TD has failed 12K early. I read that cambelt failures in XU engines are terminal. IS this true?
Is there a (quick) easy inspection I can do rather than fit a new belt to try it out?
I understand that oilleaks at tehy cambelt end of the ngine may have contaminated & weakened the belt. Be warned!

Interesting. Probably the best bet is to get the car on a 2 poster ramp with all wheels off the ground to allow you to check properly for wear in subframe mounts, whether in fact the exhaust is loose etc. I wonder whether you may have wear in the rear arm bearings on the offside, has the ZX done alot of miles?

I had that kind of problem too after six years with zx 20i. I just change the steering damper then everything back to normal. It cost me about USD 200.

I had the same problem and looked at everything. It is almost certainly the driver's door locking mechanism that is duff. It could be the passenger door, but it is most likely to be the driver's. Change the assembly - you will have to get from Citroen or a scrapyard. About £50 altogether from Citroen.

Got a big problem, my car won't start due to that the fuelpump doesn't work correctly.
It does work when I connect it to the battery directly but when I connect via the leads, it just won't work.
My car is a BX 1.9 16V -90, with Motronic1.3 woth catalyst.

There is a lack of data on the current V6 engine - so here are a few discoveries .
a) The dip stick for the Auto gearbox is hidden under the air filter. The filter house simply lifts up without removing anything - and there is the dipstick/filler. Tie it to the bonnet with some cord.

Why not try a breakers yard, the controls are nylone and cannot be glued. There is one nr Dunstable called A5 that specalises in xantia

There is only one thermostat available for Xantia 19TD, Citroen ref 1338 39.
I would check that your 'stat is not jambed open. Also check that the system has not got any air in it, and that even if the heater control is fully on, it is actually pulling the cable the opens the heater valve fully open!
